knocking noise

my mk4 6n polo makes a knocking noise everytime i press on the accelerator. it is a very loud and embarassing metal on metal noise. it sounds like it is coming from under the car but it could be under the bonnet.

any ideas?

get under the car and shake the exhaust
then you can get that out of the way cos i had the same problem

It's not the exhaust, i am pretty certain of that. could the shocks have gone?

Again i'd say exhaust as a first suspect. How are you sure it isn't the exhaust?

What about engine mounts?

What makes you think it would be suspension - you said yourself that you get the noise when you step on the gas. This is a pretty strong indication that it's related to something on the engine....

make sure your wheel isnt lose. i had that problem. very embarassing lol
