my situation.....
hi all, im fairly new here, but have just been reading all the posts and gathering information, well lets explain my situation, i have been looking at gti's for ages now and think they are stunning, all ur cars look great btw!! so i started to save up, getting there now, but people like my work mates say to me why do u want to get one of them for? they are girly and horrible blah blah blah and why dont u get this and that instead i.e a golf gti.
well i just wanted to ask all of you, what attracted you to the polo gti?? and are you happy with it now? sorry for all the questions but the technical specs say thats it is 0-60 in 8.7? and 125 bhp? but wot you think of it in person? as it says or different?
thanks, just need a little help at the moment if im making the right choice or not, i knew this would be the place to come and ask.

I love my GTI ! I think for a 6 year old car its got better things as standard then most new cars today. Climate control, Xeon Lights, Heated Mirrors.
As for speed they are a nippy town car. The car is quicker then the book stats, I kept up with my mates 106 gti no worries, and thats with my sound system in the boot!
Still get 300 miles out of a tank

I was living out in spain around 2001 -2002
and on my way to work was a VW garage.
one day they put the polo gti in the window and it was love at first site.
I went in and enquired about it and was amazed at the spec of it.
the guy showed me the xenons and I knew I'd have to have this car.
didn't actually get round to buying one till late 2005 but I love it!!
it looks stunning and I've been lucky as the car hasn't had any problems.
the clutch is great, the gearbox is great and the engine is awesome.
I regularly suprise people with how fast it is and I like to keep it clean so regularly get compliments and people asking me what I'm driving etc
I think I'm gonna keep my polo for years to come, it's definately a future classic.
I'm going to try and keep it fairly original and maybe upgrade a few parts just to make it last longer and perform to it's potential.

Sunburnfreek (sun block is advisable!),
I've had my GTI for nearly three and a half years now and its still has that attraction that first drew me to the Polo.
It suits me just fine, its small yet spacious enough for comfort, the quality is great, still looks good after all this time. Its well kitted out with all the toys you could want, they are few and far between so they are pretty exclusive.
The specs you mention are correct and for a 1.6 I think they have managed to squeeze as much power from it as possible. I think it drives well and with subtle mods you can make it better, some might say how it should have come out of the factory!
I plan on keeping mine for sometime and think it will last and still give me that enjoyment I seek in a motor.
I can see how your work mates say its a 'girlie' car, I guess because Polos are usually associated with the female species because of the size, especially little old ladies on their shopping trips but looking on this forum you can see that this is not strictly true! (but the same can also be said of Saxos, 106s, Clios, Corsas and Fiestas!).
However, I would have to say, if you saved enough and can afford a Golf GTI (a 1.8T as the others are not worth the badge and reputation) and the insurance, this would be a genuine contender, simply because of the tuning ability of the engine and the mass of aftermarket parts for the model.
Hope this helps, but don't take my advice soley, lets see what the other owners think...

i did start to think about the golf, but personally i do not think they look as good and the interior seriously put me off compared to the polo, its so bland and boring, i estimate that hopefully i will have one april may time but thought i would do the rounds and gather information a little before, next problem to overcome.......... silver? black? or red?
ha kidding that would end up a debate
after a recent poll it would appear that the black cars are the fastest, followed by silver, then red. ha ha sorry if this offends anyone
I've owned my polo gti for approximately 10 months now and have to say i have loved every single minute of owning one. The only downside i can think of is how fragile the gearbox is - if you drive it how it should be driven, you'll no doubt need to have the gearbox replaced at some point - but tbh its a small price to pay for the grin it puts on your face.
The Polo Gti is already a classic - they only brought out 3000 in this country
Thats my 2p's worth anyway.

i wouldnt really classify it as a girly car.....
get a gti, stick a set of 8inch wide deep dish wheels.... drop it like its hot....
and then see if your mates still call it a "girly car"
oh! and with xenons, climate control, bbs alloys + more all as standard it has a lot to offer. find one with leathers and youve hit the jackpot

well the book is defo wrong on the top speed (140MPH racing a vectra who gave me the thumbs up as i smoked him, private road of course!)
i love mine and its going to be three years of ownership coming up in the summer. im thinking of a new car and all i can think of is:
Polo Gti, 1.8T lump and some money spent on a TT interior and touch up on the paint. i think its a good option.

Re: my situation.....
What attracted me to it was considering it's size, there was nothing that came close to combine performance and luxury at around the 5-6k mark. It looks fantastic as standard, has a nippier than average 1.6 engine, plus it's a rare car and great fun to drive.Sunburntfreek wrote:what attracted you to the polo gti?? and are you happy with it now? sorry for all the questions but the technical specs say thats it is 0-60 in 8.7? and 125 bhp? but wot you think of it in person? as it says or different?

I'm still happy with it now. It would be great with a little more power though.
In real life most GTI's do 0-60 in 8 - 8.4 seconds. The 8.7 figure took into account luggage and having a couple of passengers if I remember correctly.

I've owned 3 previous polo's, mk1 & mk2 golf gti, Seat Ibiza Cupra sport, Golf Vr6 and now this polo for almost 2 years.
It's a great little car with a big car feel.
As with all cars they have their problems, but it's nice to have something that is a little different, well spec'ed, great fun to drive, and you get great forum's like this to chat about it!!
I find it as close as you can get to a modern Mk1 Golf gti (apart from the lupo of course!!)
Don't waste your money on anything else, invest it on a Polo!!
(can tell I work in sales!)
