Sounds very nice but will they have fixed all the other problems that afflict the current Polo line up.

The 130tdi and six speed gearbox is very tempting but that's all your getting is it worth paying the extra money? especially when i could chip my 100 tdi and get similar performance - if not more!!

If I were to trade up (which i'm not) in theory I'd be getting a better car but it'd be missing considerable trim components compared to my current TDi - following VW's trim changes early 2003. God knows what else they're going to trim from the 2004 models.

I paid £11550 for an 03 plate 3 door in silver, with 5000 on the clock. It was advertised at £12495 so I think I got a nice deal on it. I got £8000 for my 02 plate 1.4 16v (100bhp) Ibiza, which wasn't too bad either.

Opinions? Try a Skoda Fabia vRS or an Ibiza TDI Sport just to try the engine out. The engine is a great package in the Polo/Ibiza/Fabia line-up as it has more than enough power in standard form to be driven effortlessly yet still retain a good MPG. Mine's currently returning 35MPG because I'm driving it "with a lead foot", but a lot of people I know are running 50MPG while still being forceful. The ride is smooth, the engine is silent after inital start-up and it does have a grunty sound to it (well it does on the inside anyway!) It does have a big torque spike in it, which is surprising but I will get used to that when I've owned the car for a few more weeks.

Des, I see VW are trimming the specs on the Polos as well as the Ibiza. This would all be because of the imminent release of the Polo GT/Ibiza FR which they want the potential to see as having a lot more equipment than "lesser" models. That's one of the reasons I bought an MY03 car, so I could retain the bits that they've taken off.
Also you mention about chipping yours to get similar, if not better figures...the 130 engine comes out with roughly 140-150BHP when put on the RR and can be remapped to 175-190BHP with 290-330lb/ft. It all depends on what you want from the car really. This was one factor which swayed me towards the 130, especially as I am still a younger driver and no insurance company will insure me on a 1.8T, the PD130 is the natural competitor...similar if not better power, but with reduced insurance premiums and increaed fuel economy.

Anyway, I'm off for a takeaway...

You've got to love the Turbo whistle though.

I dropped my drivers window this morning -2c because the turbo seems to be more vocal in this weather. Quality sound, you'll get used to driving the Diesel after a while but it does take time.

No need to kill it like a Petrol to get it moving. My next car defo will be another Diesel just not sure if it'll be a VW.

Good going ToXXin. I would love to have the 130bhp TDI in my car. I bet its hands on performance brings new meaning to the degrading term "oil burner". Burn up the road more like! Blindingly good pick up after the turbo winds up. Great engine in a nice, light sporty frame. Who's the lucky 1



I remember when my brother bought back the Seat Alhambra 130bhp AUTO! and that went like stink with me and my 18stone brother in it!
I would like to see some Polos with the 130bhp soon. Who knows maybe one day if the there is an insurace for young drivers amnesty then i might be able to get insured on one.

Yep, there's definately more than 100bhp and 177lb of torque.

Fourth gear acceleration onto the motorway is awesome and pulling in fifth on the motorway at any speed piles the speed on without you really knowing. All in all a dangerous motor if you have a lead foot.

Has anyone rolling roaded their 100 tdi?

Found some info saying it *is* coming to the UK:

Seat's Ibiza Sport and the Skoda Fabia vRS (see links below) both come with a powerful diesel engine - and now the Volkswagen Polo is to get the 130bhp TDI PD unit. As announced at the Frankfurt Motor Show last September, this engine will be offered next year, giving the Polo a 0-60mph time of 9.3 seconds, a top speed of 128mph and fuel consumption of 56.5mpg. Torque (pulling power) output is 229lb ft, and as in the Ibiza and Fabia, this engine is offered with a six-speed manual gearbox. Standard equipment includes ABS brakes with ESP electronic stability programme, front and side airbags and sports suspension; final specification and pricing for the UK will be announced at a later date.

If thats the UK spec, you get ESP whereas SEAT and Skoda don't get it. I'm sure we get it as optional or not at all.

The Ibiza starts at £13500 or something like that brand new, I would expect the Polo to roll in at something higher than that
