Diff perhaps

Post by Tigz »

Couple of days ago I noticed a noise which I thought was transmission related.
Its not engine speed related, but wheel speed so I think its either drive shaft or diff.
As theres no noise when on tick over I don't think its drive shaft.
It sounds like something rubbing TBH, you could even describe it like the sound of a train in the distance.
Either way, its still moving so we'll see if it lasts until April.
Then if it does, we'll see if it lasts the day at Santa Pod.

Just to add.
Pedal box recall 15k
2nd Pedal box fitted 32k
Cam Belt tensioner failer at 40k mile.
3rd pedal box fitted 46k mile.
Gearbox problem 52k mile.

I'm glad I didn't buy a french car, I heard they are rubbish

Are VW aware of how painfully poor some of the major parts appear to be on the GTI? Have they ever released anything about the regular failure of gearboxes after ridiculously low miles or anything like that?

its a not very impressive really is it?

Its not good is it?
It stopped me buying a new Polo GTI, and has stopped me wanting another VW again TBH.

The new Polo GTI engine/gearbox are rock solid and well tested in previous generations of VAG cars. I almost got one over the Golf but apart from the extra speed I felt the MK5 Polo GTI was the better car overall.

Its a shame its doomed with its gearbox as other wise look and spec its spot on, it was one of the main reasons I sold mine as I knew at 68k I was pushing my luck on the original box. I too was on my 3rd pedal box aswell.

if it fits it should stop the prob - what has happened twice with mine is that a pin comes out of the diff and rubs against the gearbox casing then oild gets in and ruins bearings.....so in theory having the quaife will mean it wont break as it comes with a lifetime guarantee plus giving better performance and cornering! bonus!!

I thought the problem with the gearbox was the bearings getting worn too quickly?

Changed the gearbox oil tonight, although the noise is there, the gear change could not be better.
There was no Metallic colouring to the old oil, and I also noticed the noise on tick over so I'm starting to doubt my guess of a problem with the diff.
Its not the bearings, as it doesn't whine.
Going to take it to VW, Ive got a funny feeling the cam cover may need to be removed once again.

did you check the flanges are tight(driveshaft flanges) because they bolt to the diff not with surclip like early vw gearboxs, thats what happened to mine and didnt catch it in time, snappy snappy

They cant look at it until Tuesday.
Look the covers off myself and everything is fine so its defenatly gearbox/driveshaft related.

It got really noisy, but also noisy when engaging the clutch.
Taking the gearbox out at the weekend to see whats wrong.
