Unknown object in engine bay, pic included!

I was looking around my engine bay yesterday and discovered this (see pic). Does anyone know what it does or what it's for?? It can be moved side to side but then returns to the same postition when you let go of it.

Just curious to know what it is really

Is that near the gearbox / under the battery?

Looks like its a weight for the gearchange cables

Yep, not directly under it but not far away. Really need to get the new Haynes manual!

Yep I'd say it is that, I've got that and it moves too, it moves when you select gears or if you push it around it moves your gearstick inside your car. I still don't have a Haynes either, will be getting one soon
