oil light beeping at me and its not because I have no oil?

ok, just been driving my 16v down the M4 and was accelerating of a slip road when my oil light came on and the car beeped at me, this hapened for a seconed or so then went off. Then, about 10 mins later it did it again so I pulled off to check the oil. I gave it a couple of mins for the oil to settle and checked it. It seemed like it was up to the limit of how much oil is in the engine however Im not sure that if i had left it a bit longer there would have been slightly more oil than there should be in there.

Could it be possible that the light is beeping at me because there is too much oil in there or is it because the sensor is going wrong or the oil is getting stuck somewhere? has anyone else had this problem?

please help because i dont want to be driving my car around if it could be something serious?
