Opinion will be divided on whether it is best to use oil from VW, as it depends what oil your dealer uses/supplies. The recommended oil will be listed in the handbook, with a VW specification number. Check the back of oil packaging to see that the oil is suitable.
I am changing my oil tommorrow using Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W/40.
Some other opinions are

I used to go an oil change on my Polo every 3000 miles or so, with GTX Magnatec.

A four litre bottle of this was 21.68 at my dealer when I was there today, just for anyone's reference.
PS Minx I notice you are in Sussex, I live near Horsham.

I agree that quantum silver semi is good. always use it. my other half uses it in his g60 mk1! would never use anything else.
