Thinking of buyin a Polo Gti

Ever since I first laid eyes on a MKV Polo Gti I fell in love with it and have wanted one ever since.
I am only 17 years of age and am currently saving up for the insurance with plans to purchase one next year.
As you know they are quite rare and are not to be seen very often therefore I have not been in one any do not know what they go like? Can anyone tell me if they are any good?
I have heard a rumour also that there is a common fault with the gearbox on this model? is this true?
And also what is the performance like for these little cars? I have been in a 106 Gti which has similar stats as the Polo except it has 5bhp more. The 106 i went in was very impressive for 1.6 I found!

I had 3 cars in mind, a Mk5 Fiesta Zetec-S, a 106 GTI and the Polo GTI. It had to be the Polo for me overall

Where abouts you from mate?

I has the Zetec-S in mind as well, I think it was the Xenons that swayed me towards the Polo

same as the above two!! i really wanted a car under 10 seconds 0-60 tho and plus the zetec S is ridiculously popular. In terms of comparison to the 106 GTi, they are quicker(i got beat by one the otherday

The standard kit on the Polo is a real winner in my book. The 106 GTi is lots quicker and handles and drives far better than the Polo as standard as it is lighter BUT the Polo is better built and better equipped.

The gearboxes can be fragile if abused, but as with all cars some GTis have more faults than others

So true, found out when I bought my car, since owning it the following has been changed.. Engine/Clutch/Cambelt/Waterpump/Door/Ignition Leads/Spark Plugs/Full Service/Air Conditioning... And that's all in 1 month of owning it

Mint little car aswell. I had a zetec s and it just fell to bits. Peugot is french... say no more. VW's are german build quality and have a good reputation, if you drive one you will see and feel the difference.

I just had a new gear box, clutch and fly wheel skimmed and cost the best part of Â£900. This is soo annoying. If you test drive a polo and the gearbox whines run a mile and if you do buy one expect it fail.

These gearboxes are made from paper mashe!!!!

touch wood mines been cool just a few minor problems. by far the best motor ive owned

.as for the fiesta and 106 i would stay well clear of them as they have no class in my eyes only boy racers have them. the polo has the looks the feel and a hot hatch should have plus reliablity and build quality that germans cars have. as long as you search hard and dont rush buy the first one you see as there is always a better one out there. even if you do have to travel for it. insurance will be a killa for you though, i paid at 18 near on 1500 for insurance. plus where i live its got a high car crime level

not too bad now for me as im gettin old.

I've had a 106 Gti in the past, and in my year (almost) of owning the polo GTi, I've spent a hell of a lot more on repairs than I did on the 106 gti.

People seem to think that the polo Gti is going to be some kind of super-reliable hot hatch because it's a VW - this isn't true at all. The car has it's faults and if the gearbox goes you'll be sorry you ever bought one.

The 106 gti is faster and handles better, but the polo has more class and looks better, but it costs more too. You'll get a pretty nice 106 gti for the price of an average polo gti.

Pug's have their problems too and plenty of niggles, but they don't eat gearboxes. A ballpark figure for a polo gti gearbox repair would be Â£600-900.

To sum up, they're both pretty decent cars in their own way. If you want something in the same class but don't mind about the image, a Saxo VTR/VTS would fit the bill but for much less Â£Â£Â£s! The VTS is the 106GTi's poorer sister!

had mine almost two years with no problems, Car looks stunning and girls don't feel embarrased stepping into your motor lol
nice aggresive high reving little car perfect for city driving and country lanes.
good on the motorway although a tad noisy when you drive as fast as me

just kidding

best kitted out from standard, pocket rocket you'll find

I wouldnt go for a 106 anyway as they are higher insurance group and cheap build (as everyone says).
as for insurance...yep its a bit of a stinger. cheapest quote ive had is 1600 pound on my mothers name when I'm 18. And i live in a low level crime area

. what insurance company where u with polo_gti21?
another question...what are these little machines like on fuel? heavy?
at the moment i drive a 1.3 turbo diesel corsa

lol...so anythings going to be heavy compared to it but sacrifices must be made for my gti

Try directline, they are very good. Also HIC were good on my mate's Lupo GTi. Mine was very bad on fuel, but then it did have problems hopefully this one will be better
