Newbie: Diesel tank cover problem

Hello everyone!

I've been visiting this forum very often and found it very usefull.

I have a 2002 polo 1.4 TDI and my problems are:

1. My diesel tank cover does not open. Is there a way that I can fix or open it without damaging the paint around it

? I use a screw driver to open it once ang i damaged the paintwork on the edge of the cap. I checked the manual but there's no information on how to open the cover manually.

2. When I lock the car from the inside with the central locking button, the passenger side always unlocks itself. But when i lock it from the key it works fine.

Any advice will be appreciated

1) how are you currently trying to open it? has it worked in the past? I know this is a really stupid question but the polo fuel cap needs pressing IN for it to unlock.

It works before......but when i am on petrol station to fill it up one time , i can't open it any more..... before, it only happens intermitently, but now it is totally not working, so i need to force it to open using a screw driver wrapped on a chamois...but it still damage my paintwork. Another problem: The lights on the front door card that turns on when u open the door is sometimes working and often times not(even the reading lights when turn to doors-open as i think they should light up at the same time when a door is open).

sounds like a central locking fault.something like a faulty courtesy light switch(which is housed in the door lock mechanism) causing the door to unlock,fuel filler cap to stay locked.i'm only guessing so dont bank on it.

Well, I can get on without those courtesy lights. But the tank flasp is really causing me hard time to open....so i always fill my tank to full so i dont need to open it always. Just wondering of any easy way i can open it without damaging the paintwork.

I dont want to bring it to VW as i have just finish replacing my ARB (Â£300)and front disc pads(Â£100) and now im due for service(est. Â£170) and 2 tyre replacemnts(est. Â£120 incl. balancing + allignment) + they say that i need to replace one of my rear bump stop for Â£170.....

Could be a fault with the central locking control module. Best thing to is to have the central locking control module scanned with a diagnostics machine (or Vag-com) for fault codes.

When I had a MK4 Polo the fuel cap got stuck shut once, and it was possible to open it from the inner side via the boot.

I've never experienced this on the 9N so ain't 100% on this but there could be something similar like that in the 9N too to override the electrics

I might just bring it to VW anyway and ask them for a quote for it to get fixed. I will keep you up to date of the development.

I have bring it to VW. They say the actuator is broke. It will cost 66 pounds to replace it (incl. VAT and labor) i just need to wait for the parts as they don't have it in stock so they will ring me when they have it.

Now, what wil i gonna do with the chip i made around the tank flap?

A careful application of stone chip paint will resolve the issue.
You can get really good results if you use it carefully.

Did VW say whether your interior/door lights fault was linked to the faulty actuator?

Thanks Jamo, I might do it when they have the works on the tank cover done.

Well, about the interior door lights and my front passenger door central locking problem. They told me that they will check it separately after fixing my tank cover problem. They told me that I need to pay a fee just for checking ang finding where the problems are. So i got it free when they check the tank cover, but i cannot get rid of it on the other jobs (interior light...etc) which is I think Â£9 (not so sure). Ill let you all know of any update.
