I have also noticed this when I visited a local VW dealer here in South Africa that there is no key lock on the boot handle of an entry level 1.4 Polo. VW must be very confident in the quality/reliability of their boot unlocking system. Or is this another cut in production costs or a security improvement?
What do you guys think

With my GTi, there's no actual point in any of the locks, if the alarm is on (and its on all the time when locked) the fob is the only way to de-activate the alarm, is you use any of the locks with the key the alarm stays on, and you can't move your car!!
Nowadays, most vag cars come with only a lock barrel in the driver's side door.
