Just attempted to drive my GTi.
Set off fine, then I attempted to select 3rd, wouldn't go in. Neither will it select 1st, 5th or reverse.
So basically, I'm left with 2nd and 4th! Doesn't sound good.

Has the clutch been changed? If so when?
Mine doesnt select gears sometimes, it's just down to the clutch though.

Still on the original clutch I believe after 48,000 miles.
Really weird though. Drove it just a couple of hours ago and it was perfectly fine.

What does the clutch feel like?
If your gearbox isn't whining or popping out of 5th gear, i doubt it's the problem.

The clutch is heavy, but its always been like that really, doesn't feel any different.
And no, it's not whining or jumping out of 5th, which hopefully rules out the usual gearbox failure stuff.
Hoping it's possibly either clutch or maybe gearbox selector related rather than the internals.

Cheers Tim, I will do.
There's a small local garage just 50 metres from my flat, so I'll take it down there in the morning and see what they say.

No worries, I thought it was my pedal box at first, because I could hear it creaking. Turns out its my clutch and the P' box was creaking because my clutch is so damn heavy!!

Actually, you've just reminded me there.
I have had creaking from the pedal box area for probably the past 18 months or so, but just put it down to the typical GTi heavy clutch syndrome.

Yeah it has been.
There's a sticker under the boot carpet from a dealer in Huddersfield, and also it's been logged on the service history as I checked before I bought it.

Arite sweet.
I phoned my dealer and was told it had been done. I don't believe it has though! Will get round to going down and talking to them at some point

Just went and tried it again.
Can actually get it to engage all gears, but 1st, 3rd and 5th don't feel properly "in".
Also I did the "4th gear test" and it pulled away from standing, so it definitely seems to be pointing towards clutch.

mine did exactly this. Turned out to be the pedal box, and then the clutch - two weeks apart!

What exactly is the 4th gear test?
It's been brought up on here, but never explained fully
