Gearbox making a whining noise

Post by Razz »

hello there, my gearbox has started to whine a bit when im in 3rd or 4th gear, its not throughout the whole rev range yet, mainly 3-4k revs when i let go of the accelerator and listen in.

reconditioned box or get the bearings replaced?

or even still new gearbox from VW?

im not sure what to do, as im worried once the 1st gearbox goes, all you seem to do is get problems? is this true? has anyone actually had a succesful recon or bearings replaced and had the car give no problems?

all suggestions are welcome

and any garages they would suggest in south wales (Newport) area

um....no...Dont get a box from VW...

Take YOUR box and get it rebuilt by a reputable gearbox company...will cost you about £400.

A little bit of a whine is normal from a gearbox....hell the hire car I have now whines in every gear....I suspect there is no oil in it actually...

My polo whines a little bit....but nothing that worries me...its deffintely not as bad as it was just before it went pop..

then basically thats a recon box.....just the "fault" fixed....a box from vw is remanufactured therefore completely stripped and rebuilt.

1st hand experience too thanks

VW dont remanufacture the boxes....they get them refurbed by a third party....

All im saying is that if you get YOUR box reconditioned by a proper company you will know exactly whats wrong with it, and will know exactly what has been done to fix it....if the company knows what they are doing they will do an excelent job and give you a decent gearbox...

Plus the fact that VW charge you a small fortune for the privilage!

Yeh I'm in the same situation as you mate, my box has just started to whine.

So it's either a brand new box from VW, or get yours reconditioned.

New box will set you back around 1.1k with exchange for yours plus fitting.

Recon will cost around £400 plus fitting.

It's all what you can afford really. Du live in the Newport of South Wales? If you do pm, I've found a very reputable gearbox repair shop locally.

I had the exact same with 3rd and 4th whinning, I had my gearbox rebuilt and new clutch fitted for about £800. Sounds like I may have paid a bit much!! I had it done last November and so far so good.

tim jus pm'd you mate, and another question, the whine itself, its not like a constant whine its more like somthing which is touching something while it spins around, so it kinda is on n off but quite close a part.. hard 2 explain.. when i dip the clutch or put it into neautral it goes away, this is definet signs of gearbox isn it?

Ive literally got my car back from VW after having my gearbox fixed.
I was stronlgy recommended NOT to get a re-con box as i dont know its history, and VW only supply brand new boxes i was told so that was out of the question as all inclusive of VAT and labour etc it would have been in ecxess of £1500.

So i got mine repaired and it turned out all it was, was a sinlge bearing inside had given up.
Whilst it was all out i got the clutch changed with the release bearing too and all inclusive of VAT and labour i was quoted £1100 but only came to £860.
The main thing is VW supply a 2 year warranty on all parts and labour so if it does have any problems, its going straight back to be fixed at no extra cost to me. :D

In fact, if it goes again, then the car is going to go too.
I may trade it in for something bigger, ( or something the same size with hell of alot more power ).

I just gave my car to VW and they sorted it all out, i believe they done the repairs at there garage ( mind you its a large VW garage ).
I say this as they never mentioned sending my box away and the turn around for getting it done was only 5 days and to have it sent of would have taken longer than that.

That's quite a reasonable price from a VW direct.

I've been quoted just shy of £700 inc vat for the gearbox rebuild. But going to have to get ANOTHER clutch at the same time too. This is from a recommended private owned company.
