this is what happend to mine weni took it off to look the gears was grinding so i put a new1 in but some thing worth a try is molyslip from halfrods or wilco it protects the gears and lubes them up better yuo mix it in with the oil so put oil in the put the molyslip in
Does anyone know how you can check if there is enough oil in the gearbox ?
The clutch and gearbox are both the original and i am not aware of the oil being changed in the box before.
The car is on 80K so its done alright so far, i might try this molyslip and an oil change, but i do not know how much oil to put back in (how many litres) etc.

think its a hex key, remove undertray look to right side of gearbox two plugs approx 3" apart on the vertical line, undo lower plug and drain, remove top plug allow it to drain 20 mins or so, rotate wheels to get diff to turn and bit more will flow out. replace bottom plug, refill with oil till it flows from top hole, rotate wheels again, top up bit further replace top plug. 20 mins tops!
for reference to those who wish to know, the gearbox oil to be used is:
75W90 Fully Synthetic - 2.7 litres
I have spoken to a specialist who said that because it sounds like i caught it early, it might be posible to just replace the 5th gear. (at a cost of £260)
He said that changing the oil will have no effect as i am not having any problems other than 5th.
He has recommended using 5th as little as possible until i can get it looked at.
If upon inspection there is more damage to the gearbox other than 5th gear, he will do the whole box for £475 all in.
What do you reckon guys ?
Is £475 a good/bad price for getting the whole box done ? (the only reason i am tempted is because the garage is 2 minutes drive away from where i work)
sounds cheap to me depends how 'good' they are, i'd check if that includes clutch/release bearing etc etc you may aswell have it all done if the 'box is out
But check what clutch kit he is supplying, VW do factory refurbished clutches sold as 'brand new' for twice the price say a SACHS kit would cost. Plus the SACHS kit will be brand new.
