When i quickly change into 5th gear it sometimes crunches unless i let the revs die a little and put it in slowly, but doesnt happen all the time :?

The clutch seems ok and i am putting down to the floor but if your too quick, it crunches

Anyone had this problem ???

I was thinking of getting the oil in the box changed, but if its on its way out i aint gonna bother.

Can anyone help please ?

How old is the clutch?

And have you had the oil changed before?

Does anyone know how you can check if there is enough oil in the gearbox ?

The clutch and gearbox are both the original and i am not aware of the oil being changed in the box before.

The car is on 80K so its done alright so far, i might try this molyslip and an oil change, but i do not know how much oil to put back in (how many litres) etc.

I'd defiitely look at getting the clutch changed and the box oil replaced then.

'box oil IIRC is 2.7 litres? Don't quote me but I think it's that.

my policy is "if it aint broken, dont fix it"

I will try the gearbox oil change & molyslip, and if that dont work i will wait until something breaks properly and then get it fixed/replaced.

I have managed to get hold of some molyslip from halfrauds (My missus works there so i got discount  )

Only thing i need to work out now is what gearbox oil i should be using and how to get it in the box.

Any ideas on how to fill/unfill the gearbox oil ???

think its a hex key, remove undertray look to right side of gearbox two plugs approx 3" apart on the vertical line, undo lower plug and drain, remove top plug allow it to drain 20 mins or so, rotate wheels to get diff to turn and bit more will flow out. replace bottom plug, refill with oil till it flows from top hole, rotate wheels again, top up bit further replace top plug. 20 mins tops!

your looking for fully synthetic oil for the 'box also

for reference to those who wish to know, the gearbox oil to be used is:

75W90 Fully Synthetic - 2.7 litres

I have spoken to a specialist who said that because it sounds like i caught it early, it might be posible to just replace the 5th gear. (at a cost of £260)

He said that changing the oil will have no effect as i am not having any problems other than 5th.

He has recommended using 5th as little as possible until i can get it looked at.

If upon inspection there is more damage to the gearbox other than 5th gear, he will do the whole box for £475 all in.

What do you reckon guys ?

Is £475 a good/bad price for getting the whole box done ? (the only reason i am tempted is because the garage is 2 minutes drive away from where i work)

sounds cheap to me depends how 'good' they are, i'd check if that includes clutch/release bearing etc etc you may aswell have it all done if the 'box is out

Right then, i rang him back up today and he has said that worst case scenario for gearbox & clutch would be £576 + VAT

He also said that if i pay cash, he will lose the VAT

He said that the parts he will use will come directly from VW and he will need the car for 2-3 days.

Dunno wether or not to go for it as it still drives at the moment but i dont wanna caught out whilst driving it

Sounds decent enough if the work is good.

But check what clutch kit he is supplying, VW do factory refurbished clutches sold as 'brand new' for twice the price say a SACHS kit would cost. Plus the SACHS kit will be brand new.

cheers for the heads up Tim ;)

I cant afford to have it looked at just yet so i'm driving really carefully at the moment

Well for reference, GSF do the SACHS clutch kit for £86.95, part number 3000581001.

It may take them a day to get back to you, but they do stock it.
