what tyres shall i use for 17" alloys 205/40/17 or 215/

the width, thats what the 205,215 etc is for.

i have 6.5j (6.5 inch) alloys
so i have 195..

i don't know what size tire because you havent said the width lol.

if your unsure it'l be stamped on the alloy behind a spoke or somewhere on it.

7'' and 7.5'' should wear the 205's

If you go to 8'', I'd pick the 215's. You could also get some 205's for the 8''s but it's got to have a good side protection (Uniroyal Rainsport, Pirelli Pzero Nero or Toyo Proxes T1-R for instance).
