What year is your polo. I think from 2004 they changed there belts to a chain instead. Thats what i have on my 05 polo. But if yours dose have the rubber one then you are going to have to change the water pump as well. I never changed that on my last polo and and i blew the headgasket. You'll prop hear different information on what should and should not be done, so really just spend the few euro or i should say the few pounds and get the haynes manual. To put your mind at rest.

Belt and waterpump plus the tensioner and roller all changed today, after an extensive search I found myself in Halfords buying a Haynes manual lol

Was well worth it though :D Price of parts for the 9n was a bit a of a shocker to me, but these things need to be done I guess, and I knocked the price down on the ground when buying it :D

I don't think that you can make that assumption, so engines are just variants of legacy models so still have a belt driven camshaft. The 1.2 engine is currently one of the few small VAG engines to have a chain driven camshaft - and the early ones certainly caused a lot of problems - ie more early failures than the belt driven ones - so that was not jolly progress!
