Broken Boot Latch.

Post by kraized »

Hi everyone :)

I think my boot latch release is broken :( I can hear the boot unlock and lock via the central locking and you can hear the lock work with the key but pulling the handle won't open the boot and I can't feel an resistance on the handle. Could it be a broken spring or something? Right now I can also access the boot through the back seats.

The boot handle is connected to the latch via a rod.

Number 25 in this illustration:

Basically, that is connected between the back of the handle, to a ringlet on the latch which pulls the mechanism open. Its possible the little plastic insert that holds it in place has merely popped out. Have the tailgate cover off and see if you can see anything disconnected

How do I remove the tailgate cover if I cannot open the boot? Is it a fairly simple procedure. Think it might be a bit beyond me. :(

You will have to drop the rear seats and climb in that way - there is a screw in each of the two grab handle recesses? I can't remember if they are torx or phillips heads though! :?

Fixed mine this morning, thanks to Alex's info and diagram (thats another pint I owe you!) :)

Undo the two Torx screws, lift the moulded plastic tailgate cover up and away and it will unclip (requires a little bit of force in places) then you can lift it off and out of the way. Pop the offending rod back in to place and put it all back together again (after making sure the latch works)!

Couple of pics... here's our rod (at the bottom of the image), it has popped out of the white socket on the end of the mechanism:

And here it is, popped back in place - in this pic you can see where the rod travels to at the bottom of the bootlid:

Cheers

Re: Broken Boot Latch.

Hello,

Sorry to drag this old thread of mine up again but believe it or not I've only just had the chance to check out my broken boot latch (yes I've been all this time with not being able to open the boot  ). Anyway, its not a problem with a dislodged rod  everything seems OK on that front so I can on think its a problem with the lock itself

I'm just wondering if anyone else's lock has broken and is it east to replace? I'm trying to avoid taking it into VW as my local garage charges £30 + VAT just for someone walking outside and looking at the car
