£380 to replace the the diff bearing on my gearbox.

Expensive dont you think? or does that sound right to you?

i never had a rebuild on my old polo, i had a new box so it cost me £1100 at a dealer!!

i had to buy a 2nd hand box =£250
rebuild, all bearings replaced= £322

so thats about average lol. steep ain't it!!! hopefully doesn't go for a while now tho fingers crossed haha :D

a mate recomends fully recondition gearbox with RALLY bearings 8) it will be strong than ever

Ya i was speaking to the gearbox boff, at this place and he reckons for the money you pay on uprated bearings, its not worth it. take this for example

My box has lasted 96800 miles on the on the original bearings, there is no reason why it wont last another 90K on a new set of standard bearings. by then im sure i would have moved on to something else. S3 maybe

well 2 days later and the job has been done. They have done a fantastic job, the gears feel better than they have ever felt ever before,

but unfortunately the final bill came to...........wait for it......................... £485 inc vat sir

Ouch indeed matey...Although for that price its not to ouchy, i guess...Especially if its gearing alot better than it has done in the past :-)

how can we find out if its been done before! i bought my gti 4 months ago the box is ok for now but there aint nothing like dat on the historys and services???

Probably hasn't been done then. You could always ring up the previous owner? Also check the gearbox out, see if there's any markings etc on it that would suggest it's been out before, or is not the original.
