white stuff in oil cap

Post by oliver12 »

well i had a look in my oil cap today and noticed that on the cap just the cap there is like white stuff not really white but like greyish/white when i wiped it with my finger it went black?

if i went out for a hour come back it wouldnt be there just like a week or so of use and it appears ?

is this headgasket signs ? or could it be condensation lol ?

also it hasnt lost any power!

thanks again oliver

Think you've answered it yourself! Could be condensation, or early signs of head gasket failure. I'd get it checked at a garage, takes 30 secs to test the radiator fluid for oil contamination with a 'dip' style test.

nice for that so if there is the tiny'est bit of oil in the radiator its the headgasket?

how much are these to get fixed at a garage?

also how hard are they to do yourself?

and would it be better going stainless-steel?

thanks again

sounds like your head gasgate has gone, it all depends if the head is warped and it most likly has warped and that would cost aroundabout £150 to get it skimed and pressure tested and then you would need a gasget set and new strech bols, i wouldnt recomend doing it yourself unless you no what your doing as the strech bolts (bolts that hold the head on) need to be torqued to special setting and differnt cars have differnt torque setting so you would have to find that out. do you mean a stainless steel head???

I dont think it would make much differnce reali coz ones its done its most likely not to go again if fixed right. well sertainly sounds like the head gasket. most garages will have the tester thing i would be surprised if they didnt.

if you use your car for short mile trips i.e around town then that could be the cause, condesation build up.

well they asked if i drove on the motorway i said hardly ever just 2 miles to work and back , plus we have had cold nights here he said it's probably condensation, he said change the oil and monitor it over the next few months, he hovvad some sort of prob over the water resevoir and said theres no oil in there , i was quoted £25 to supply and fit the temp sensor , he said new coolant and he will reset the ecu for some reason ?

if it was your headgasket gone, youd know as youd have blue smoke coming out your exhaust and a horrid smell coming through the air venets. have you alterd your air intake because this sometimes causes a bit of water condensation to get in. if you notice there will be a spare pipe hanging around to the top left of the enginee. normally you should put a filtter on this.also if theres no oil in your water tank, then the enginee is fine. its just condensation. youll need to run some engine flush through the oil and do an oil and filter change. problem solved :) alternatively for a better product you could change the loom aswell as the oil and filter change.. not too hard to do. i think theres a DIY guide somewere on here.
