Squeaking Noise When Pressing Clutch

Post by johnoirl »

Hi Guys.
2000 Reg GTI Polo 6N2.

Guess what. after spending nearly 600 euro on getting a clutch and cable put in, it now squeaks like hell, only like 4 weeks ago.

Heres what ive diagnosed so far.

When the engine gets hot it gets stiffer and squeaky. This would be when driving.
When cold in morning its ok not as light as it was when it was put in though.
When cold after 10 mins of pressing the clutch it starts to squeak at the gearbox side not in the car.
Took the cable out and greased it up. Still the same.

The only thing i can think of is the release fork.
When the cable is off the release fork on the gearbox their is a little bit of play forward and backward.
I also get a little bit of a crunching feeling when pressing the clutch in.

The mechanic is a reliable guy though, he said the bushes wherent dry when he had the gearbox off, he greased them up also.
And when i got it back from him it was perfect. no noises, and a smooth press :)

Gear changes are still perfect though.

Any ideas anyone would be great.
Dont fancy spending a fortune again :(
Although might have to do this myself. Oh the thoughts of doing this..

Cheers

Ah, i see, ya id do it my self. have had that part of the dash out anyway.

but even though the squeaking is coming from the gearbox side? it could still be the pedel box?

Cheers guys

Make sure the clutch cable is clipped to the bulkhead properly... there is a plastic holder for it bolted to the bulnkead... (I cabletied mine in place).. that will help...

Then get some spray grease and work it into the cable..... Its about all you can do!

yup i know it should.

I took out the new cable today and put in the old one just to see, but nope it was still squeaking.
so i greased up all of the new cable and put it back in. tighened up the cable to max and it was smoother. but couldnt leave it that way as the bearing would get damaged. so i loosened the cable up and its back to square one.

Checked the pedel box and their doesnt seem to be any damage or problems with it.

Im about to either kick the poxy car at this stage or get rid of it, every time i get rid of a nissan i get a pain in the arse car.
got rid of an nissan almera years back, bought a daewoo nubira and had 4 years of hassel with it.
sold a nissan maxima and got a gti polo and back to having trouble.

pitty vw arent as reliable.

cheers for the help lads.

just a question tegwin or anyone. is their a clip just behind the bracket where the cable connects to the release fork on the gearbox to hold the cable? i notice a big hole that seems to be missing a bracket or clip of some sort. i know about the one on the firewall thats a big one that clips the cable in place. got that in ok. but just to note something also vw or the manufacturer of the cable have changed the size of it. i put both originals parrelell to each other and the middle big plastic thing is in a different position than the one that came with the car. maybe part of their improvements in parts LMAO.

just called the mechanic and he said that i could use his pit to do it. man o man its gonna be a poxy job.

That would explain why I couldnt get my new cable to clip to the bulkhead... I used two cable ties to prevent the cable comming out of the holder.... I found that if it uncliped whilst driving the clutch suddenly became terribly notchy...

I will have a look at my clutch cable mount tomorow...

But im not entireley sure what you mean..... can you get a pic of the top of your box...... il compare it to mine...

Finally got to the end of the clutch problems, the guy who put it in didnt align the bearing correctly. as when the other guys who fixed the gearbox took it out seen the problem and fixed it, have it back a few weeks now and its perfecto.

Cheers
