I've got a 2001 Polo GTi with 101k, and recently I've noticed that when you press down the clutch to change gear there is a bit of a whine that you hear - the pitch falls as you press in the clutch.
What are the usual symptons for the box going? I've read it's usually in 5th - does the pitch of the whine increase with the revs, or appear at certain revs?
I've tried to be very careful with the box in mine, getting new fully synthetic gearbox oil in it at services, but I'm a bit paranoid!
cheers!
Clues that gearbox is on its way out?....

That sounds like your clutch release bearing is dead - you can replace it seperately, but depending on clutch wear, most people have the clutch done at the same time.
The box symptoms are generally a noise all the time, and the whine will increase with the revs, sometimes in all gears or just one gear or even no gears!
