Which Temperature Sensor?

There are numerous threads that state a lot of "starting from hot/warm" problems can be solved by swapping out the temperature sensor/sender. I'm quite prepared to shell out a few quid for a new part and fit it myself. However for any given model Polo there appear to be two types of temp sensor.

One looks like this... (about £12)

...and the other this: (about £22)

So which one is the one everyone goes on about? I have seen both types in photos people have posted on here... Are they the same thing?

If you go to Euro Car Parts you can put in your reg number (if you're not sure of your model, which I'm still not) and it will bring up both components with exactly the same description.

I've just double-checked the above and it's now found a third component
(about £13)

Hmmm... I'll look under the bonnet and see if I can identify it without pulling it out.

It's the green one. Have just replaced it today.
