Hi,
I am looking to replace a 2002 polo sdi and i have got my eye on a 1 owner 54 plate tdi polo twist with full vw history 1422 cc engine (it has also just had the cam belt done) -have to admit we have had a fair few problems with the 2002 sdi (see previous posts !!"!!!) and wondered if the tdi polo has any particular problems or will hold any nasty suprises for us ??

Don't know much about the 1.4 but have you considered the 1.9TDI? It's a tried and tested engine and has that bit more ooomph for motorway cruising. No particular faults specific to the engine that I know of.

The car will be mainly used by the wife the lower power will be better for economy and insurance purposes just apity its still £120 a year to tax opposed to the newer models at £35 year !!!

Not a massive difference in economy to be honest, just worth considering a test drive perhaps? Parts could be cheaper too.

you will not go wrong with the 1.4 tdi twist I have one and so far very pleased with it after nearly 5 years and 74k miles. common problems are just the same as the petrol models for running gear and body work etc the engine just plenty of tlc and regular oil changes with fully synthetic oil and she will be fine. Alittle hard on front tyres if you put 16" on thats about it.

Im Backing David up on this one i have them both, the 1.4 and the 1.9 in terms of economy there roughly the same and in terms of power the 1.9 has a little more power however its not dangerous power it just means that if you were trying to pick up speed on the motorway you would have to push the 1.4 a little where as the 1.9 gets there nice n easy. in terms of tax both of mine are 2006 so the 1.4 is £35 a year where as the 1.9 is £120 a year. the 1.4 is three cylinder so it sounds louder then the 1.9 however there both nice cars so you can decide

The deed is done the troublesome 2002 1.9 sdi will be gone on monday lets hope the replacement is more reliable especially with winter round the corner and all the woes it can bring.Thanks for all your replies.

We have noticed the car has rear drum brakes !!! Polo tdi twist 1.4 litre 75 PS registered October 2004
I would have expected rear discs --I have the original sales brochure from 2004 which says '1.4 litre/75ps diesel engine front ventilated discs Rear Discs' seems a bit strange does anyone else have this model and are the rear brakes disc or drums ?

Hi... I have a 2005 reg 1.4tdi twist as well ,it also came as std with drums at the back and tiny discs at the front. Fortunately I managed to get a donor gti 2008 model with 752 miles on the clock with a damaged roof that got written off and I stripped everything off the car and upgraded all of the running gear, exhaust, sides skirts etc etc, so my car now looks like a gti other than the front end and the engine which I can get a hold of if need be.
You will find the brakes are ok but not that effective hence I changed mine and it makes a huge difference in braking ability. I don't understand why vw reduced the rear to drums...aparently it was due to a lot of cars having deffective rear brakes according to the local garage.. so far I haven't had any problems at all with them.

Very fortunate to know somebody who deals with insurance writeoffs and this one came up almost brand new other than a damaged roof so I took full advantage of it, so my car may well be nearly 5 years old but everything bar the body and engine are new. Saved me a fortune as was about to replace my car now I don't need to.
