Rear Wiper Arm Removal???

Hi,

Part of the plastic on the rear wiper arm split before Christmas which meant that the wiper just swung round and pointed straight down. Now I've managed to get the arm off but the metal inside section of the arm (where it sits on the spindle) is still stuck on. I've got a new arm now from the dealer but can't get the metal bit off!!! Is there a knack to getting it off or do I need a special tool?

(I'll try and get some pics later of the bit that is still stuck on.)

If I am reading you correctly, you are trying to remove the rear wiper arm from the spindle. To do that you will need to remove the top plastic shroud - it unclips, then unscrew the arm retaining nut. After that is off try soaking the exposed tapered spine part with release-all or even just WD-40. Now, using either your nails or something small, pull out the washer nozzle and keep it in a safe place, next, using a small set of pulley drawers, draw the arm off the spindle. If you end up destroying the end of the spindle, then don't worry too much as there is a repair kit available to replace the spindle and washer bar. If you have removed the washer nozzle first then I'd expect that you should be able to reuse that spindle etc. These bits can end up being really stuck to the spindle, so after getting it off maybe coat the spindle with grease to prevent that happening again. Thanks for the advice. Just to clarify, the first picture shows the bit of metal that is left on the spindle with another picture showing the old and new arm (so you can see which bit of the old arm is still stuck on the spindle)

If you think that you are handy with a hacksaw, then remove the nut and cut down into the metal part (ring) that is left without quite cutting through to the tapered outer shaft. do this maybe in two places half a revolution apart, then do as I suggested, ie pull the plastic spray nozzle out, maybe place some thing like a "one pence" coin over the end of the shaft to protect it and using a set of pipe pliers try to force the ring up the tapered shaft - it should be weakened now that you have cut it almost right through - and so will either slide up the shaft or break into two parts - either way it should come off. If you don't want to cut into it, then just follwo my pervious advise and use a small pulley drawer - puller - but you will need quite a small one. After getting this ring off, scrub the splined tapered shaft after spraying with WD-40 so that all the old "curd" is removed - fit new arm and refit nut and tighten down - refit spray nozzle with the spraying hole uppermost.

Apologies for my ignorance but what is a "small pulley drawer - puller"?

Humm, I am meaning a tool that is used to pull gear wheels and anything else up and off a shaft - or pulleys even - as the name implies. There is a good chance that you will succeed by doing as I indicated and weaken the ring by hack sawing into it but make sure you do not go down through it into the spindle/shaft - then use a big pair of pliers or wate pump pliers to try to dislodge it or break it.
