am a new GTI owner and fairly new to the forums. I used to drive a mk3 GT but saw the GTI n fancied something a little more practicalish and reliable. Everything is sweet apart from

one thing that i noticed on the drive home, whenever i stop at lights or anything there is a sort of clicking sound coming from the glove box/air bag area.

It only seems to do it when i have stopped, ive tried handbrake on and off left in neutral turning radio on and off, air con etc.... but nothing seems to affect it, it just kind of does it

when it wants to.

Im used to driving old cars where problems are fairly simple to diagnose and this is me first car with power steering and all that jazz, so i dont have a clue why its making it

Any one think they can help????

Firstly hello and welcome!

This clicking - have you tried turning off the fan/air con and listening then. Sometimes the fan motor gets a bit noisy and can cause a sound like that.

There isnt much behind the glovebox apart from the AC unit so unless its coming from the engine and the noise is passing through, its hard to say what it is.

yeah have tried that it happens regardless whether the AC is on or off.

Done a bit more testing and its really weird these are the symptom if you like lol

* makes fast clicking noise when battery is on and then slows down when ignition is on

*only makes it below 40 MPH and once over 50 it stops completley

Ive pulled down the bit under the passenger footwell and left the engine running and it does seem like its coming from the AC bit under there, looked at trying to get to it to have a

closer look but seems like i have to take the whole bottom part of the dash and center console out to get to it (according to haynes manual)

Am going to try taking the fuse out for the AC unit and hopefully if there is no noise it will mean that it is something to do with that and it will be worth me taking the bottom half of the

dash out unless anyone knows an easier way to get to it?

Hmm you sure its not coming from outside the car? Have you listened with the pass window down?

There isnt really an easier way to get to it unless you remove the glovebox. Access is very limited on the GTI models for behind the dash items.

Id take the fuse out and go from there

yeah am guna try that lol just noticed its got dark now lol. it dont make a diff whether window up or down but will give that a go as i havent tried that yet

mine sometimes clicks when just ignition is on but usualy becaasue the air con is on, sometiems its just the battery

tried a few more tests in the dark lol. Found out when it is clicking if i hold me hand on whatever it is i can definitely feel something hitting or catching

Hmm could be one of the recirc flaps sticking in the AC unit. Have you got vagcom? If so, scan the Auto HVAC module for faults.

You can get in from the Ross Tech webby site ( an old shareware version but still does the trick). When i was looking at Gtis i came across one which barely none of the electrics worked, and there was a clicking noise coming from the dash also, had a thought it would be a relay switch.....

In terms of getting the main dash off( the body pretty much with the airbag and side vents), was one of the hardest jobs i had to do with my old Gti, i had to smash the window (even more ) so get to two poxy little screws that were holding it in.....

well ive found that when i turn the engine on it does it, if i turn the air con on press the circulation button it stops it then turn it off. So unless it starts to cause real problems im going to leave it like that for the time being.

Firstly i started off with me GT. Loved the car to bits and never really thought about getting anything else. Though winter me Brock B2's took a bit of a bashing to i took them to the Wheel Clinic in Northampton to get them refurbished. Instead of getting the dished diamon cut i got them powder coated silver which to me made more sense as imo they look better and are easier to take car of.

When i took the wheels in i noticed a silver GTI in the car park and asked the guy whos it was and funnily enough it was the guy who was doing me wheels lol, i had a poke about and he said he wanted to sell it so i said i would ask about and see if anyone i knew wanted it. When i went back to pick the wheels up i saw it again although this time i swear it had a big sign above it saying buy me!!!!

Over a little pondering and weighing up what would be better i decdied to try and convince the mrs to "lend" me an undisclosed figure. Supprisingly after showing her some pictures it took 4 hours and the deal was done.

Had to wait a bit for him to sort a few bits out and to for me to get the rest of the money together but on friday i picked it up

With the arrival of the car i now have 2 sets of steelies 1 set of baby G60's 2 sets of teledials and a set of Brock B2's

Engine: 1.6 16V VVTI (Standard)

Suspension: Standard

Wheels and Tyres: 15" Teledials 165/45/15

Exterior Styling: Red Piping around grille

Car has done 90k and has had full VW service history and has had clutch, gear box and cambelt done twice.









First thing i did when i got it home was to unscrew the arial as i dont like it and i dont listen to it so no point it being there

Plans for the car

Basically want to keep it simple. At the moment I'm broke and owe money so it wont be hit with the lowering bat untill i have paid debts off. Hopefully, coil overs, black mirror and visors, clean up tatty roof lining, clean up the engine bay, de badge polo off the back, stubby aerial and sort splitter out.

Any help comments or opinions welcome

Both cars look good mate, love the MK3 and the GTI looks really tidy too.

The "Polo" and "GTI" badges have been put on far too low though, need to be another 100mm higher by the looks of it. It does look very tidy though, not keen on the wheels but I know they are popular on the dub scene.

Am I right in saying its had 2 gearbox refurbs and its on 90K miles? the previous owner must have enjoyed driving it
