coughing ans spluttering polo 16v

basically over the last couple of days my polo has been coughing and spluttering in first and second under acceleration, but today its got considerably worse, it now does this in all gears when i try and accelerate! more so in 1st,2nd and 3ed. any ideas as to what this problem is? any help would be great.

Try cleaning the throttle body with a can of Wynns Fuel Intake and Carb Cleaner (halfords sell it) or a similar product

Change the fuel filter

Check the spark plugs, and change them if necessary

Check the condition of the air filter, and change if necessary

If none of that fixes the problem, change the engine temperature sensor as this often causes problems!
