CV Joint

Post by polospeed »

I have been told by a garage that I need a new CV Joint as I am getting a knocking noise when pulling away.

My question is how hard are they to replace and do you have 1 or 2 on the car?

Thanks

Phil

There are two joints per shaft - but normally its the outer one that is called a CV, or constant velocity joint and the inner one is a U/J or spider joint. Whither its urban myth or not, there are reports of hubs/shafts being damaged/wrecked when trying to get the shaft out to change the joint - depends on how you attack this job or what condition the shaft/hub interface is in really. Minimum that you will need to but will be a new CV joint (differant for every variation in shaft) and a boot kit and a new hub nut. Other bits that are useful to replace will be the lower joint securing bolts and maybe the plate nut assembly - might need to remove the TRE to make getting the shaft out, I'm not sure. I'm sure someone out there has done this already and you might be lucky enough to get away with unbolting the shaft and applying full wheel lock to get enough room to get the shaft out of the rear of the hub - take care of the ABS sensor though or you will damage it.
