Stupid and potenially dangerous steering wheel

Post by Grey_Polo »

My Polo has the now Audi-Vw range-wide steering wheel with the hole in the bottom spoke like this:

While driving with a loose jacket with the cuffs open, I got the button caught in the slot. It happened twice! Both times while parking or driving slowly and using the wheel a lot.

Both times it ripped the buttons off, but I winder what would happen if they hadn't broken off...

Wheel turned though 90° left or right puts the slot right where the wheel is gripped. Soft floppy cloth of jacket with large loose cuffs allows the button to drop though the slot. At the other side the button flattens and does not come back out.

The wife has now sewn both buttons back with extra strong thread. This could be "fun"...

if its such an issue, carefully place your loose cuffed coat on the seat next to you and put the heaters on if you find your cold

its the price youll pay for being fashionable

When i had the new one as a courtesy car i almost crashed twice because of that slot.

Mine admittedly was me trying to park just using my finger poked into the slot. i quickly learned my finger was too big to turn in the slot.

I had one of these for a few days as a courtesy car as well, can't say I noticed any problems with it at all.

+1 to this. Pretty simple solution to the problem IMO.

Are you seriously trying to blame nearly crashing on that slot? I can understand the button story (just) but you tried to steer with a finger stuck in a tiny slot of a steering wheel....... :?
