Suspension, alloys etc!
Suspension, alloys etc!
Hey guys,
Would like to lower my car but havn't lowered any of my cars yet so dont know what it'll be like in terms of comfort etc. I think mines quite uncomfy at the mo but could need new dampers, had 70k on when i bought it, 75k now, and doubt they'd been changed before. Ideally if there were any dampers I could use in conjunction with new springs that would lower and maybe give a better ride than i've got now, that would be ideal. Also think I want some 16" rx's, standard looks to small. And on that topic, is it just me or do the standard wheels look well too far in the arch? I hate how it looks on the back wheels, they look like they need to be spaced out an extra inch, but dont want to use spacers coz apparently their s**t!
Any advice would be appreciated guys!

Re: Suspension, alloys etc!
If you dont want spacers then get wider wheels, the standard GTI rims are only 6.5J so maybe look at getting some 7.5J wheels.
16" RXII's are 6.5J too but the 16" RX's are 7J.
Go for a set of uprated shocks & springs if you want the car to remain comfortable because coilovers kill comfort.
If you want the proper VeeDub Down & Out look then you'll need coilovers and Spacers

You soon get used to the ride on coilovers and you can get the look you wanted, springs are hit and miss as they cant be altered when on the car.
I had 50mm springs on mine when i bought it but it felt like a boat round corners.

I dont really understand wheels
what does 6.5J and 7.5J stand for? How wide the rim is? What does et stand for and what does it do if you change it?
Because I was looking at getting some Borbet A's and they are 7.5J front and 9.5J back, would they still fit on my car?
Im useless with wheels

Re: Suspension, alloys etc!
J is how wide the wheel is and ET is how far they sit out on the hub.
Borbets can be done on a polo, i used to have some on mine without problems, they were 7.5J all round:

You have no chance of getting 9.5J on the back without pulling your arches which in my opinion look s**t when done

Dont suppose you have any photos looking along the side of you car with them on so i can see how much they poke out?
Hmm thats a shame :/ what would pulling my arches actually do? silly question but im new to this kind of thing

Pulling or rolling the arches gives you more clearance for wider wheels or wheels with spacers, helps prevent scrubbing.

Havent got a pic face on for some reason ?
Here are a few shots from different angles, think they were ET35 from memory, the wheels i have on now are 8J all round but dont stick out as far as the Borbets did.
I must admit, i shouldnt have got rid of them, i miss them.

I really cant see 9J wheels going on the back at all without it looking like a barryboys special.

They look soo nice!
I am defianatly getting a set in the summer...
Rolling your arches doesnt actually make the arches look any different? It just allows the wheels more room yes?
