A new Noise

My cars started making a new noise. Wondered if anyone else had expirenced it.

Its a ticking\tapping noise which is loudest under accereration, it stops when the clutch is depressed. And it gets faster or slower in relation to the speed i'm travelling.

Probably clutch or gearbox realated..

Gearbox & Clutch issues usually tend to be more of a grinding & whining sound rather than ticking/tapping.

It could be something loose under the car such as your exhaust or maybe a heat shield.
How long has the noise been there?

I've started noiceing it over the last week.

Hard to say as road and engine noise tends to drown out the sound.

I took the car to a VW specilist this morning has the noise is getting annoying.

Unfortunalty it looks like it my turn for the gearbox to go bad.

Just looking at my options. This box on ebay looks like its well built

Gearlink in Salisbury are the people to rebuild you box for you. Just ensure to ask them to use fully synthetic or VW gear oil when refilling as this is only done by request

As for removal/fitting, APD in Wareham are very good - I know both Paul and Neil personally and they are very reliable. If you give them a call, be sure to mention me!

I wouldnt buy an ebay box - 99% chance the ratios are wrong, or its been rebuilt with the wrong bell housing as the GTI is specific due to the EDL.

I would offer to remove the box etc, but im so tied up at the moment I havent got time to think at all

Thanks Alex. Whats involved in taking the box out? Disconnect drive shafts, selector rod and disconnect and lower from the engine? I could probably give it ago myself, trouble is my dad who'd help me and would know what he''s doing would goes on hoilday at the weekend.

Aye not much more too it than that

Just some bolts are in an absolute nightmare of a place and they are really really difficult to remove and refit, plus you need a big jack to slide it back down and out

Id be tempted to pay to have it done personally knowing how difficult it is.

Your probably right. I'll only ed up getting stressing out and causing some more damage to it.

its not that hard to be honest with you, i did it on my last GTi i was breaking and i did it with the engine still in the car, just supported it with a jack and a block off wood on the chassis legs, all in all theres about 15 bolts to undoo if i remmber rightly becareful though as there heavy, there 32kgs

I'm now only using the car if I really need to. got the train too work this morning, that sucked.

Give it a go Neil, i did it a few years ago. There are some tricky bolts,my front end had been removed which made things easier

Gearlink in Salisbury are going to do the whole job for me, for a reasonalble price. I'm suppling them with a new clutch aswell which they'll fit free of charge. Ordered the clutch thats £108 from GFS. Thats works best for me any problems and they can't blame the fitter. 1 year warrenty and its just down the road.
