polo gti engine cooling fan and aircon

seeing the other similar thread got me thinking, my fan only ever runs at full speed when the car is starting to get very warm.

it never runs slowly and never runs when the aircon compressor is on unless the engine is getting hot.

its my understanding that with the compressor running the fan should be running too, is this correct?

do i need a new fan or is it something more serious?

cheers

Your fan resistor is shot - you need a new fan so that you can run a slow speed fan again.

so this isnt an ecu fault (im use to rover systems which work differently) and a new fan will definately fix this?

cheers

Not an ECU fault and a new fan will fix it - i had this problem about 2 weeks back on a clients GTI

Wonderful, you don't happen to know how much a new one is off the top of your head do you?

Cheers

About £150 from the dealer

Recommend you find a working used one.

Ouch

Is there a test that can be done to check if it's working with the use of a multimeter?

Check the resistance between the earth (brown) and the two other contacts

You'll need to set the multimeter to its highest ohm setting, and if broken, one of the contacts when tested should show a 1 instead of 0.something which will confirm a break in the circuit

Brilliant, thankyou

Did this solve your problem? My climate control doesnt work and I have never heard the compressor or had a slow running fan, could need a regas aswell maybe? Thanks

Yep. New fan sorted mine.

If you're compressor doesn't kick in then you have a fault other than the fan. Most likely need a regass.

When this happens on golfs, they just solder in a couple of new resistors - would that be possible on the Polo? Would save about £145...

Not on my phone now so can post links easily.

If it helps there's this: http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/p/59897/449470.aspx#449470

And more importantly this: http://website.lineone.net/~alan.james. ... epair.html

Not sure if the Polo fans are the same, but could be something to look into anyway!

Ok guys thanks for your responses I will look into it,

Sorry if this is a stupid question dont really know much about air con, if theres no gas in the system the compressor wont kick in? I dont want to spend money regassing it then find I have a shot compressor.

Thanks for your help really apreciate it
