DMF OR SOLID???

Post by onlydiesels »

i spoke to scott at darkside developments today regarding a new clutch/flywheel assy for my 1.9 tdi sport, whilst i initially called for a price on the dmf/clutch kit,he also offered a solid flywheel conversion+clutch kit which consists of a gen.vw g60 flywheel, sachs clutch kit,all bolts etc. i was maybe a bit sceptical at first as i`d read all sorts of things about `solid` conversions...BUT..he assured me that this would be his choice if it were his money, and that they run this set up in their own vw caddy, with no problem at all, which he added, lives a hard life. he also asked me about what sort of power i`d be putting through it to which i said that it`s std at the moment but i would prob be looking at a remap early next year,so would be around 130..140 mark,so won`t be curling any tarmac up obviously,,now then, what i`d like to know is,whilst both solid + dmf would cope with the power, does anyone have any first hand experience of either of these options ? ?
i want to retain some degree of vibration free comfort which points toward the dmf,but don`t want to be replacing it again BUT on the other hand,if the `solid` set up is as good as scott say`s then :?
i don`t have any reason to doubt what i was told,i just want a bit of `first hand experience` to help me decide.
forgot to add that the dmf kit is also sachs, and that both were a reasonable price (the `solid` being just slightly more.)

thanks in advance...

As I understand it, the DMF has the effect of making the clutch "feel" lighter, as well as damping vibration. Considering the relatively short life they have, (no personal experience, but neighbour's had a series of issues and STUPIDLY short life on some DMFs) I'd be tempted towards a solid conversion.

I thought that there were other reasons to try to use DMF - and with a "punchy" TDI PD engine that included protecting the gearbox from power snatches (torque pulses) a bit more than a solid flywheel would. My B5 Passat 2.8 V6 has a DMF - and it took me quite a while to work that out - that explained why it felt strange when moving off "sharply"(as well as having a super soft "nose" bush) - and after reading about DMF early failures, I started to go easy on it. BTW that car with that silky smooth engine just does not need that DMF but I suppose as its built up of old Audi bits, then it would have been used by Audi to improve "smoothness"!

I have run a single mass now for two years (lightened one) it is fine but makes a chatter noise as it is lightened. A normal weight won't chatter and as for vibrations and that its not a noticeable difference. Saves a lot of agro mate dual mass has gone 2 times this year (it gets driven hard) he is going single mass now and all good so far. As for gbox it will be able to take it just check oil level or replace it and use shock protection oil if you that worried.

may have to wait a short while though on this.....other half says theres work needed on the house....tut..tut..
