Unknown Fault Codes
Hi guys im wondering if anyone can shed any light on the DTC's below. I have managed to resolve the two EGR ones by carrying out an adaption, however i can't find any solutions for the error 17961 or 01314. I believe 01314 is as a result of the engine check light coming on and should go when i can clear 17961. This has all occurred after cleaning the throttle body with a bit of carb cleaner. THe car is a 1.4 with BBY engine, any information you guys can shed is greatly appreciated.

Re: Unknown Fault Codes
My listing of codes gives, for 01314 "engine expensive equipment" - but that could be a bad translation. the other code, 17961 is really exactly what VCDS gave you, ie duff MAP sensor readings. Maybe need to try a new one to clear that fault.
One thing though, my wife's car has a BBY engine and was throwing up many faults and eventually EGR insufficient flow, I took the EGR off and it looked okay though would not match its original potentiometer lower limit so maybe not closing completely - still to change EGR and have a closer examination of the old one. What I did find though, was the EGR port on the interface plate was choked - and I cleared that, got rid of frequent pinking and insufficient flow problems. There was very little mess in the actual TB - only below it.
My wife's car also has the same engine ECU S/W as your one (same part number), there has been S/W flash updates it seems, to address some issues, her car has been serviced my me all its life so has not been offered any updates by VW.

Re: Unknown Fault Codes
Thanks for your reply, do you think 01314 means that the ECU is knackered? Also where is the MAP sensor on these?

Re: Unknown Fault Codes
I once got that sort of thing that I'd never had before, ie, ABS module reporting a fault in the engine ECU module - I put it down to a recent change in VCDS and ignored it - and it went away!
The MAP sensor, on that engine, is bolted onto the "driver's side" of the inlet manifold - so is easy enough to reach (it looks like) after the air cleaner assembly is removed. These MAP sensors turn up frequently on ebay as used items, so maybe try one from there first. I bought one to try to sort out a "weakish" feeling at light throttle, but have not fitted it yet. I can give you a VAG p/n tonight.

Re: Unknown Fault Codes
The MAP sensor or thrust sensor VAG p/n is 036 905 051.
But, I strongly advice you to clean out that EGR pipe port in the interface plate and maybe try to clean up the EGR, though in my experience the EGR was not very dirty. Then perform adaption on both the cleaned EGR (and interface port) and the throttle body. Check on the internet by using "VAG FAULT CODE 17961" as a search term. You might find that others have had this problem only after cleaning the throttle area with cleaner, one bit of advice was to run the engine to clear the cleaner from the inlet manifold area.

Re: Unknown Fault Codes
One thing, when I checked using the search term I suggested, I found at least one example of exactly the same pair of fault codes that you have - unfortunately, there did not seem to be a definative answer, although there was the suggestion that there were S/W updates for some engines, the article that said that was for a 1.6 16v - but I'd reckon that some of the similar 1.4 16v engines, in particular the BBY version, could also have had S/W updates created to remove some issues - so far, pinning down that fact has elluded me! (closed shop mentality - only those who need to know will ever know!)

Re: Unknown Fault Codes
Right I have today i think got to the bottom of the issues and the car now seems to be running well (touchwood)
I removed the throttle body completely to find, that half of it was clean and the other half was absolutely caked in black coke. I have thoroughly cleaned this with a mixture of carb cleaner and acetone until it was spotless. I have then replaced the gasket underneath it and re adapted the throttle body and as i say touch wood car seems to be running fine and no lights on the dashboard. Whilst i was at it the MAP sensor was also replaced as i found that it was covered in a sludgy deposit.
I will report back after a bit more running but after about 30 miles the cars seems OK, lets hope it stays this way.

Re: Unknown Fault Codes
Just one thing, did you lift up the interface plate that sits below the throttle body, and clean it and its two side ports up? That was really where most of the soot/oily sludge was on my wife's car - I'm guessing this happens where the oily air from the crank case which comes in from the RHS port, meets the hot exhaust gasses coming in from the LHS port (from the EGR valve).
Oh, and did you buy a new MAP sensor (how much did it cost?) or get a used one from ebay - I'm just curious in case I end up finding that I need to buy a new one instead of using the used one I bought from ebay.

Re: Unknown Fault Codes
I did purchase a new MAP sensor direct from VW and got it for just under £50, which i didn't think was to bad, its also a modified part as it has a slightly different part number and looks a bit different as well.
I did not take the adaptor plate off mainly because i dont think my car has one, it all seemed to be part of the inlet manifold. Car has done about another 20miles today without issue and now ticks over at around the 600-650rpm mark.

Re: Unknown Fault Codes
One way to work out if your car has an interface plate, and later cars did not, is to remember if you needed to unbolt the throttle body end of the EGR valve pipe and the push on rubber pipe from the crankcase fumes from the throttle body. On my wife's car, seems to be quite near you car build date wise (same engine ECU S/W level) there was an interface plate which is just an aluminium spacer with the two listed above, pipe connection points or ports. The order of assembly from top down is:- throttle body > steel gasket > interface plate > rubber O-ring seal > inlet manifold. This lot are held down with the long screws that drop in through the top of the throttle body.

Re: Unknown Fault Codes
Ahh rite my car defiantly did not have the adapter plate, the egr pipe was attached directly to the inlet, still all seems to be working fine as well!
