Tuning box....any good?

Hi,

I'm considering fitting a tuning box to my 1.9, tdi, PD engined polo. (yes, i already know a remap is considered a better option, but i dont want a remap!)

Please can you tell me your experiences, good or bad, and who's box you've used.

I have one on my 6R TDI and so far so good (touchwood) however when I had it on my 1.4 TDI I had the car chuck a engine management light at me every three months because the fuel temp sensor kept going due to the chip essentially tricking the car into thinking it was cold all the temp so the car then chucked in more fuel to compensate and this is where it got its extra power from... Was a waste of time on that car. I bought this one to see how I get along with it and I've been running it for nearly two months now, if it chucks up a engine management light it's going! Hope this helped!

I want the flexibility of being able to remove the box as and when i wish, and also the ability to transfer it to another vehicle (where possible) plus, i can also sell it on when i dont need it and recoup my money.

I see your point as it does have its advantages.. I personally wouldn't go for a cheap tuning box as they're not exactly made with quality in mind.

There are several companies (such as REVO) that do plug in devices. They wont be transferable to another car tho once its set to your own (unless its reset by that company for an additional fee!).

I just dont think its worth the risk of a blown turbo etc for the sake of the extra cost of at least a half decent map! Just my opinion.

Yes, they will send you another one........but at a price!....

why do you want to be able to add and remove it? if its your car you should want it all the time, since my car was mapped its been mint! if it ever lost the gains from the map i would hate it, its so smooth now and much much faster. to sum it up these 'tuning boxes' you want are sh1t mate hence my 95% of the people on here go for remaps, its tailored to your car so it works with your vehicle where as with these boxes they are just generic... most tuners offer to take the remap of (for free) when you sell the car anyway so... if i were you just go for a remap fella.

Most tuning boxes are utter poope

They trick the ecu into thinking the engine is always cold thus overfuelling, causing smoke, poor mpg and potentially bore wash.
