Did the sport model have uprated suspension ?

Post by nofeeling »

does the sport model have uprated suspension ? The n/s suspension mount bearing is clunking when turning left ,looked from underneath and it looks very rusty,Easy enough to change ,but this site ,http://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/car-bra ... strut.html
lists a few ,depending on what suspension is fitted . I would have thought the suspension was more heavy duty to cope with the heavier diesel engine .Anyone know what set up is fitted to the 1.4 tdi sport ?

One way to solve that issue (standard or heavy duty top mounting) is to go to VW parts place and get the real replacement parts. From your reg number they can find the VIN number of your car, and so, if they know what they are doing, pull up the "car data" listing that itemises any options used at factory build for that individual car.

Are you sure that its not the top coil of the road spring that has broken off? Sometimes a bit hard to find this out - jack the car up and use your hand to follow the spring back up to its top end and compare with the other side.

Thanks .Just had a quick look ,and the flat end of the top of the spring is visible ,looks too short to me ,and when the wheel is turned the spring turns .Should it be visible and should the spring turn ?

I'd be surprised if the springs "go slack" when the front is jacked up, normally takes a serious bit of compressing to take the "weight" of the top mounting when the strut is getting taken apart - well that is unless the spring has broken and is now quite short.

When you turn the steering wheel the hub + strut assembly should turn - and that includes the spring. There is a bearing just below the top mounting and above the top spring seat that allows everything below it to rotate.

Coming back to the original question, the Sport models have uprated dampers and shorter springs.

Thanks for the replies ,think I,m getting there .Spoke to TPS and they say only 1 top mount listed .Spoke to AVS and they say there are 2 top mounts ,standard and heavy duty/sports ,look the same just stronger rubber on the heavy duty item .Think I,ll get the heavy duty ones .Nice to know that the sport suspension is diff to the standard setup ,should come in handy if new springs/dampers are needed .

Quick update .Fitted heavy duty console bushes ,heavy duty top mounts/bearings ,anti roll bar bushes and o/s track rod end .Car is much better .Gonna get a set of subframe alignment peg things ,only £30 ,then get tracking done .
While struts were off I checked front springs for the colour code and found nothing ,must have had new springs ,prob just the tdi spring ,not a sport spring ,which may explain why the car is on 195-55-15 tyres instead of 195-50-15 as factory fitted ,taller profile to reduce the bigger gap in arch from the taller springs .Next job ...Bosch aero twin wipers .
