Switching DRLS

Post by chrispy. »

I know many have asked before but dont know if a true answer was given..

My dipped beam bulbs keep blowing..
Now my DRL's are my Dipped Beam bulbs.
Me thinking they are on every time I drive (which is a lot - 14k miles a year) they are burning themselves out.

Does anyone know of a way to change them to Front Fog?
Is it a case of removing the light switch and moving cables around?

Please help! :)

You could change the wiring to make the fogs DRL's, but there are three problems with this as far as I can see.

One is that any wiring changes would be a bit 'ghetto' if you don't know what you're doing, and have a modicum of skill with car electrics.

The second is that fog lights are not DRL's, even though they are in the same position. You'd possibly make your car fail an MOT, as well as being illegal.

The third thing is, to do it properly, you'd need the combined fog/DRL units as fitted to euro cars, and possibly different switches/harnesses and almost certainly VCDS.

I'm investigating doing this for my friends Polo with headlight DRLs, so I'll share the info if I get anywhere.

The fact that VW UK offer the retrofit DRLs in a bumper cutout position suggests it isn't as straightforward or cost effective to change as we might think, otherwise why wouldn't they offer it?

f you want to disable your 'low beam' DRL function

Pull out the light switch in the cabin, and at the back of it ;

1) Bend or insulate pin '3' = Disables low beam DRL function at switch position '0'
2) Bend or insulate pin '6' = Disables plate lights at switch position '0'
3) VAGCOM 'turn off parking/side lights at position 15' = Disables front & back parking/side lights at position '0'

ususally this option is only on cars without a bcm controlling the lights. this means you have to cut and re-connect wires to make it work.

Remove and isolate original wire from slot T17/3

Insert the new wire in T17/3 slot light switch connector, from here to 56 slot in fusebox, from the other hole in 56 slot to DRLs beside foglights. Put a 15A fuse in 56 slot.

Removing fusebox to gain access in rear side is hard without experience.

In some cases you need to change the light switch.
