Air Con/Engine Noise

Hi guys. I've got an annoying noise issue with my 64 plate 1.2 Polo TSI. There's a croaking (sounds like a cricket) noise which is constant after starting up the engine, and the only way I can get it to stop is by turning the air con ON - once on it sounds almost like pressure is being released and then there's silence. However once I turn the air con off, the noise is back and I repeat this process several times throughout my journey to avoid the croaking!
I took the car back a few weeks after first buying it to repair a dodgy seatbelt and at the time I asked the mechanic at VW to have a listen and he said it was just because the engine was so quiet, you notice things such as the fan belt.....this sounds like BS to me though.
I want to take it back to the dealers for them to check it out as it's obviously still under the 3 year warrantee, but just wondering if anyone else experiences this with their polo - and if it is normal?
