<splitting hairs>
Well, it
should be a 1.05 unless someones done a swap... easiest to call it a 1-litre tho (as its only about as powerful as eg a fiat or ford 1000cc at best)
</splitting hairs>
The little 1043 tries its hardest, bless it.... by the "pin" you mean the ickle stick on the speedo right

get to an incline, gradually push harder til you realise your toes have met carpet and nothing much is happening!
Try dropping a gear, it can shift well enough, so long as you squeeze it til its eyes pop out heheh.. when you hit the limiter you know you've gone far enough (drop 10% off for future changing..)
4th gear at 30-35mph is quiet and smooth enough but theres sod all pull! Still there's a fair bit more than in those other engines mentioned (well... except maybe the pushrod fiesta/ka one... seems to be a bit of a terrier as well), its got stamina so to speak. Just that, it may be holding the power well, but theres owt to hold on to
(to be a git and assume you didnt do that of course.. for all i know you could have been staring down a 1-in-8 at 45 in 2nd

)
there's always the sporty gearbox swap-in, induction kit, catalyser removal, re-chip, etc options if you want to get hard core with your car and get a bit more oomphness from it... tho if you can find one cheap and the tools to do it with, simply throwing a 1.3 in might be a better idea, and the insurers probably like it more as well!! (plus that ones far more tunable, for one thing, much easier to get chips! -- make sure it's an "old" 1.3, as its simply the age of the engine (block?) which decides whether you can keep the cat if my memorys right

)
well... depends where you are i spose... mine did have a bit of trouble round wales from time to time.. encourages you to take it a bit easier on those narrow mountain passes!
There's a lovely route from Bangor to Aberystwth you should try, gives the little banger a proper workout, you can see the muscles bulging out by the end

Mate was telling the story of it in the pub today, he's a scout leader and had the job of driving the backup transit for a trip from somewhere a bit south of Barmouth to Porth Dinowig (somewhere near Caernarvon if memory serves), along with his dad. Just your regular late-90s (so by now, knackered) Transit, absolutely loaded to the roof all the way along with heavy camping gear etc, way over the legal max to be entirely honest. By this point im getting apprehensive of what the story may contain, because i've driven that route with a fairly lightly loaded car before and it was hard.
Cut it short.... old, heavily loaded transit, with the horrible non-turbo Duratorq diesel engine... and this is on a route where at some points you have to be in 2nd in the Polo just to make it up one side without stalling, and down the other without dying.... dude was into 1st gear and having trouble on some bits, and suffering terrifying brake fade on others. Felt them going on a steep bit after hitting it a bit too fast, and could see the hill was about to take a turn for the worse.... just about dragged it to a halt, taking about a half minute from 30mph, hard on the handbrake and thru the gears... they got out to consider options...... heuuuuge long rubber strip behind, smoke pouring from the discs and drums

... needless to say the rest of that jaunt was a rather slow and very very careful affair! Wheel nearly fell off at the end because the heat had damaged one of the rims!
Now THATS some hills! Give them a try, be worried about how slow your car's going... then get out at the top, look down, and be really glad you didnt have to walk or cycle it!
There's a certain pass over the pennines

lake district

thats quite famous for being torture, would like to give it a whizz just once before selling the car on

(apparently you can make it 2-up in a fiat 500 - if one of you gets out to help push)
