Cruise Control Retrofit - With a difference

I've been looking into retrofitting cruise control on my 6n2.
Checked all the searches etc.

I've got the part numbers for the T4 stalk, the wiring guide from Club Lupo, almost all set to go (aside buying the parts)

Question...

What has everyone done in regards to buttons??
I saw one build with a Golf(?) GTi steering wheel, using the oem buttons.
Looked smart, except I've got a 280mm Momo going in.
I'd like keep the buttons on the wheel (and I have a way to do this)
But, are they wired directly, or does each button run a set resistance and a single signal wire?

Any help would be awesome

Done abit more looking, and from what I can work out, the cruise on these doesn't quite function like other systems I've played with.

The previous Renault system I used had options to set/remove a speed limiter, and set / raise / lower a cruising speed.
The T4 / Lupo / Polo setup, just appears to cruise at the speed it's at when you hit the button?

Am I on the right lines, or have I missed something?

Thanks for the reply, it sort of confirms my thoughts.
The last cruise system I retrofitted was a Renault one into a Clio 172.
That uses a canbus system with 1 signal wire and 4 microswitches running different resistance values, different resistance performs a different function at the ECU!
I ended up wiring that up with a Momo wheel and making a loom to feed from the 4 buttons each with an inline resistor.

Not my photo, but a similar setup to use the same custom loom.
This is what I had in mind for the Polo if it had speed control etc.
