Hello all,

I have recently bought a little run around. 1.4 auto 16v petrol. Its a bit jerky into first and I think it needs an auto box fluid change.

Has anyone got any links to the parts/oil etc. To buy online or is there a how to guide anywhere for changing the auto box oil?

Ideally would like to do it myself with a mate who is handy with cars. If not possible, any ideas on cost from a garage?

What is on the clock? Is it the problem there all the time or intermittent?

95k on the clock. Only seems to jerk from neutral or at like 5mph into 1st. Fine between all other gears. Maybe it's just me getting used to an old auto box finding drive.

Ive had a read through. OK, I'll just persevere as the fluid change sounds like a big job as it's a sealed unit. Apart from that the car is immaculate ans FSH and had belts and pump changed recently.

Also read that it may be the ecu cutting the fuel when coasting or standstill and then kicking back in again.

As the polo gets older I'm experiencing more, yet occasional, electrical gremlins. Not sure if that would extend to the ECU, but that is the first time I've heard about the ECU as a possibility for this issue. I'd say the reading on the clock is not excessive but a fluid change could be worthwhile for longevity? I planned to a simple drain, measure volume, and refill same. Not sure it is worthwhile but someone might come along with a stronger view on this.

I've decided to drain and refill the ATF. Can anyone confirm I'd be OK using Febi Bilstein 30018 Automatic Transmission Fluid or do I need VW brand? What quantity is needed?

Incidentally, the Febi part numbers I found for the ATF filter and seal are:

Febi Bilstein 26055 Transmission Oil Filter
Febi Bilstein 47381 Sump Pan Gasket for automatic transmission

I'd have no concerns using the Febi oil. They are OE supplier to mercedes for gearbox oil, enough said.

What year is yours and the gearbox code?

ATF filter and sump seal arrived today.

Any idea if this filter looks like the correct item?

2002. Not sure of the code but from a scan I get:

Part No. 001 927 731 J
AG4 Getriebe 001 2998

G 052 990 A2 is the oil - Febi 29934
