App Connect only works with Google Maps?

I have App Connect on my December 2017 GTi and it works with Google Maps but will not recognise TomTom Go. Does the system only work with Google Maps?

are you using CarPlay or android auto?
Tom Tom Go works on CarPlay but not on android auto (Google restriction I believe)
