Driven with oil cap off, please advise

Hi all,

My car is a 2018 1.0 95HP Polo SE

I did something stupid and when re filling my oil I forgot to put the oil cap back on (very stupid). After driving for a while I noticed a horrible smell. After opening up the bonnet (hood) I discovered oil had splattered not everywhere but within the vicinity of the cap. It was obviously smoking (hence the smell).

I've wiped up as much as I can, though it still has some to burn off. also the oil temperature reading doesn't seem to be working in the car, is this dangerous, what would everyone advise?

Also if the wire was knocked off for the oil temperature sensor, would anyone know where that is?

I agree, the oil level monitoring system module should also be housing the oil temperature.

I think that is better to wash your engine in someone special.

If your oil level is still ok I doubt you would have done any harm but I would get your engine bay cleaned down. I did the same thing myself years ago in a Corsa, drove from the Wirral to Manchester before I noticed, apart from some oil splashed around the engine bay and the dip stick showing minimum no harm was done. The oil temp in the Polo takes ages before it shows anything, has to be 50c before it registers and that can be a good while after the coolant is up to temp.
