General wash and wipe issues

Post by Bepis »

This week I noticed a nice puddle and a constant slow drip coming from the bumper under the washer bottle luckily it smells like screenwash and not power steering fluid, however, there is no loss of pressure front or rear and the fluid doesn't p**s out when I pour it in. I'm going to take the bumper off tomorrow to get a proper look but I've gone and picked up a washer pump seal as after some reading when they fail they seem to cause similar symptoms to those I have and it was only 99p from VW (part number 443955465). Is there anything else it could be?

My front wipers were also quite noisy so I replaced the blades as they were getting old. With new ones fitted they're still as noisy but do not skip and smear at the edges. I had and put on again Bosch A928S' as they deal with the rain very well which is all that really matters and they are quite affordable. A friends Skoda Fabia NJ which has similar size wipers that can also be bought for the 9N with the right adapters (Bosch APU21 and APU19) make no noise at all wet or dry and after looking at the two blades they are almost identical. So is this just a case of an older car being an older car or something else as I noticed the wiper arms didn't offer much resistance when I pulled them up?

The final issue I have is with the rear wiper which I also replaced at the same time today with a Bosch H282 (J hook style rear wiper arm). The wiper arm has basically no clamping force at the edges so all the way around the edge of where it wipes is a smear as there obviously isn't enough pressure being applied. Could I just replace the spring on the arm and how hard would it be to fit the arm that allows the blade-style wipers to be fitted (Bosh A330H)?

After taking off the wheel arch liner the leak appears to be coming from where the plastic elbow joins to the rubber pipe on the left hand side. I can’t see or feel any cracks and the washer motor itself is dry.

First, I'm sure that there is a washer repair kit that covers that elbow etc, a bit annoying that it was not the pump/tank seal though!

The original factory fit wipers on these 9N Polo were actually Bosch and while not perfect, I always either found NOS genuine VW ones online at a good price or just bought from Halfords/ECP again always Bosch.

Rear wiper, as soon as I bought my wife a new 2002 VW Polo, I set about fitting an aero rear wiper and arm, you also need a new cap for it, so that car never really ended up with being used with the old style spring back rear wiper.

That car was traded in in August 2015 though, having run 105K miles, a BBY motor.

Funny you say that but after taping the elbow the water started dripping from the bottom of the pump where the 2 hoses connect. So it could be the pump or the seal. Seal being the easiest but at that point it was dark and the liner was getting in the way of my torch. How would I go about replacing the pump as the pipes seem to be well crimped on?

I also took the chance the clear out the rear of the arches which I’m glad I did as they were quite full and luckily no rust.

My pump went 2 years ago water froze and pushed the end out i renewed the seal but that only lasted till last november when the pump cracked so replaced the whole thing .Got it from GSF cars, the pipes are a click fit and are a tight fit onto the pump how ever they need to be given a strong twistingpull or levered off.Fitting them are more of a pain as they need to be pushed on really hard, the far one is the worse but make sure they click into place and fill it with water to make sure they are fitted properly before fitting wheel arch.Found adjustable pipe pliers come in handy for aplying pressureon the far one as not a lot of room to work in.

My rear wiper does not work properly ,it leaves a unswept area about 10cm wde across te windscreen like it is not contacting properly or if there is a flat spot or silicon on the surface.Put new blade and arm on it but made no difference :( and silicon is a sod to get off aswell.

Update on fix: Washer pipe has chafed and started to leak, plastic elbow had split and the pump itself had failed internally causing a leak. So 3 leaks in all. Had pump, seal and pipe replaced.
