I’m just wondering what this pipe does, it connects into my air filter box/engine cover. I have put in a cold air intake but need to have a filter on the breather pipe. Is it necessary to have this pipe being filtered? If so could I join the pipe from the cam cover to this pipe and then up to a air filter ?

Also does anyone know what this hole is for on the silver box ?

The hole on top of the engine on the valve cover is the PCV. The other hose seems to be a vacuum line to the EGR system (not sure what it does) and the hole on top of the exhaust manifold heat-shield is where the intake takes hot air from to prevent icing in cold conditions. There’s a small valve in the engine cover which you’ll see a tube coming from that will fit into that hole. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much, couldn’t find what they were anywhere. Is it necessary to have these pipes being filtered . I have an air filter fitted to the throttle body but will it do any harm if the other small pipes aren’t being filtered?

I think these breather pipes are filtered essentially for emissions controls.

Most people have 2 bungs put onto their intake pipe and either put the PCV straight in or through a catch can then connect the vacuum hose for the EGR. Not sure what effect it will have if they are not connected. The PCV will just vent oily residue and the EGR may not work as intended.

I'm not trying to knock/shame you, but what do you expect to be the overall outcome of dumping the original air filter box other than increased induction noise and maybe less power due to the change or due to the air intake now gulping in warm/hot air.

A killer posting maybe, but if you don't make these changes you will have no problems to worry about wrt this filter change.

Trust me, if it was a win-win replacing that factory fitted air cleaner set up, then I'd encourage you to do it if only for small improvements.

Also likely it will impact your mpg (cold start especially in winter) adversely.

I’m just interested in the induction noise to give it a better sound, it is only a 1.2 so I’m not too bothered about increasing power as it’s my first car. Will it pass emission test with these filters on? I will be posting pictures of the filter installed I’m just waiting on parts to be delivered.

Also can anybody recommend good first modifications to the polo whilst on a budget ?

Take a look at Cars With JB’s pointless polo project on YouTube. He has done some mods which you can probably do on a budget but just be aware of insurance costs as mine was bad enough with a stock polo as a new driver.

For a simple mod I would recommend is to fit some OEM alloys from eBay. I had steelies that we’re heavily rusted and picked up some São Paulo 14” alloys from eBay for about £120 and fitted some new tyres. If you want to go for a bigger rim you can get the 16” Montreal’s either from the polo or the golf. Ones for the polo seem to be more expensive as I believe they’re a 2 piece but they both look the same. Believe the wheel specs for 16” are 205/45 tyre 6.5 wide rim x 43mm of offset with a 57.1mm bore and a 5 x 100 bolt pattern.
