‘New’ style GTI badges for grille / side / rear - where to get?

Post by ad_182_uk »

Obvious answer VW but assume they will be £££.

Aliexpress tends to make copies for a few quid but not seen any links yet?

Any ideas?

Guess all a straight fit as its just the gti design thats slightly sleeker.

Just out of curiosity, why the switch? Prefer the newer style font for the GTI logos?

It wouldn’t be a straight swap - check out the differences in the pictures below;
  • comparing pre and post facelift models, the inner edge of the headlamp unit and the outer edges of the grille are a different shape.
  • the red stipe on a facelift grille wouldn’t line up with the red stripe in the headlights on a pre-facelift car so would look really odd.
  • difficult to tell from the pictures, but it looks as if the lower part of VW badge fits further into the top edge of the bumper on the facelift car than it does on the pre-facelift car, so that suggests the facelift grille may actually be slimmer - top to bottom - than the pre-facelift version. If so, then fitting it to a pre-facelift car would leave a gap between the bottom of the grille and top of the bumper unless a facelift front bumper was fitted, which would then also require new headlamp units to fit the shape of the new bumper.
So it looks as if changing the front grille could possibly also involve some very expensive changes;
  • new headlights, and the functionality of IQ matrix LED headlamps may not be compatible with the pre-facelift car.
  • new front bumper, plus the cost of painting it.
  • if the shape of the outer edges of the headlamp units adjacent to the front wings are a different shape / profile (no idea if they are), new front wings (plus painting) would be required! 😮.
Aside from the cost, all those modifications are also likely to have insurance implications. Additionally, when the time comes to sell the car, potential buyers may be put off as all those front end changes could suggest the car has previously had a front end impact and repaired with the wrong parts.

SRGTD - maybe my question was misunderstood? I was eluding to the little badge not the entire grille :D

late pre-facelift models have the new 'GTI' badging so must fit.

From memory the front GTI badge is 2 screws, side ones and rear are all stuck on with 3m type material... so heat gun and floss to take off.

I just prefer the new style logo and VW badging, and since its already fitted to some late reg pre-facelift thought it must be possible.

I don't think i would put the rear GTI badge in the middle though!

Oops - apologies! That’ll teach me to reply to a post early in the morning before I’m fully awake 🤣.

I agree with @S_94 on the font style as I also prefer the original style ‘GTI’ badging, but it’s good we don’t all like the same things. I personally wouldn’t change the badges on my car as it’d cause issues with my car OCD if the GTI badging on the steering wheel was the original style font and the exterior badges were the new style 😲.

Have you checked sites such as eBay? There are usually a selection of GTI badges on there for sale, so there could be some in the new style font.
