Check right reversing light!

Post by Gelo »

2014 VW Polo – “Check right reversing light” won’t go away after unplugging rear lights (no bulbs changed)

Hi everyone,

I have a 2014 VW Polo and recently I disconnected both rear light units — left and right. I unplugged the left reverse light bulb and the right rear fog light bulb, just to inspect and test how the car detects disconnected bulbs.

At one point, I removed the right rear fog light bulb, turned on the ignition, and as expected, the car displayed “Check left rear fog light” on the dashboard. However, once I reinstalled the fog light bulb, that message disappeared completely and hasn’t returned.

The problem is with the reverse light:
• Ever since unplugging and reconnecting the left reverse light, I’ve had a constant warning:
“Check right reversing light”
• But the Polo only has one reverse light, and it’s on the left.
• The right side has a rear fog light, not a reverse light.
• I didn’t change or swap any bulbs — everything is in the same place as before.

What I’ve tried so far:
• Double-checked the connectors and bulb sockets on both sides.
• Cleaned the pins and made sure everything is firmly reconnected.
• Verified that all bulbs are in the correct positions and working.
• Scanned the car with an OBD2 tool — but the “Check right reversing light” warning still remains.

The fog light issue was temporary and resolved itself. But the reverse light warning is stuck, and I can’t figure out why, especially since the light is working and nothing was changed.

Has anyone experienced this before? Is this likely a false BCM error that needs to be cleared manually? I’d appreciate any insights.

Thanks in advance!

Soft Reset:
Clear the/all fault code(s) (DTC(s)) with your OBD2 scanner.

Hard Reset if the soft reset fails:
Disconnect the battery for a few seconds, reconnect it, take a walk, and clear all DTCs with your scanner.
