Amber LIM warning sporadically appearing (DSG Polo AW, 2021)

Post by strategygoose »

Wasn't sure if this belongs in the electrical bit of the forum or here, but decided here is likely best.

Got my Polo (2021, AW DSG) in April 2024 approved used. Everything was, and has been, great. However, there was an intermittent fault with the speed limiter, where !LIM would display on the dash. I'd have to turn the car off and on again to get it to go away. I'd noticed it happened a lot when I'd set the limiter, forgot to unset, got out of the car and when getting back in (either after 5min or 5 hours or a day - no rhyme or reason), I'd have !LIM warning shown.

The battery was knackered so I replaced it soon after I got the car. The error stopped (and when the limiter was set, it would work the next time I got in the car), but has started reappearing once in a blue moon now. The last time it happened, I'd left the limiter set, got out the car and got in 5 minutes later to see the warning. Turning off the car, taking the key out, popping key back in and starting cleared the error.

Thinking to get VW to have a look at this under the warranty but want to have some level of knowledge on if this has impacted others before doing so - and what the resolution was! I'm taking pictures of when the LIM warning appears next to the mileage so I can trace fault codes, but appear to have lost my OBDEleven...! Borrowing someones shortly but thought to post this in the interim.

Anyone else had something like this happen?

Just a thought, but was the new 12v battery coded to the car when it was fitted?

If not, the car’s battery energy management (BEM) system won’t have recognised a new battery had been fitted and the rate of charge applied to it by the BEM system will be at the level that was required by the old battery and that could potentially shorten the life of the new battery. A low 12v battery can generate false warnings; if you’ve had any other warning lights or messages or your car’s stop start doesn’t function as it should, that could indicate your replacement battery’s voltage is low.

In the first instance I think I’d be getting the battery checked before booking the car into VW and paying their diagnostic fee, which is probably around £150 these days.

Thanks @SRGTD - it was indeed coded (type changed from EFB to AGM, correct Ah capacity and the BEM code changed). The battery seems good - health test shows 91% health, and the voltage I'm seeing never dips below 12.5v (according to the tracker). Start/Stop also works as expected...

This is the problem with intermittent faults, ha. As soon as I book it in, it won't reappear!
