Rust on rear drum brakes.

Hi guys.

Well I didn't actually notice this myself at first, but Aaron did on my pics.

!

Anyway I seem to have some rust on my rear drum brakes already even though my new Polo is only just under 3months since I got it.

Do you guys have the same problem?
Do I need to do something about it?

Surely this is quite crap since it's so new - what will it be like after a year!

Even the front disc brakes had some rust just one night of not using it! On the surface but that disappeared as soon as I started again for obvious reasons.

the front 1s will turn "yellow/orange" when water gets onto them.... such as overnight wet conditions and after washing the car etc....dont worry about the front 1s.

cant really comment on the rear drum brakes... because i had them after 1 month when i bought the car and i was changing wheels.

Do you reckon I could get some rust remover from Halfords or somethin'?

I don't want my whole rear drum brake to disappear in a couple of months time. LOL

dont think i wll dissaper (or dissolve)

ull need to rub it down b4 applying the paint anyway

I might "question" my dealer about it. Request for an replacement to some disc ones.

On the topics of brakes - is it possible to get some disc brakes for the back or some Brembo?

I love them.

fink u need a brake conversion. (or u shuld have bought ur car earlier the year to get discs all round!!

Yeah well I didn't know much about this whole car/Polo business back then!

All drums rust, best to give them a nice coat of paint, or spray them.

A proper Brembo conversion costs upwards of Â£1500 not to mention how much it will cost for replacement discs and pads! Not sure about a normal conversion to a VW set-up. If you found a scrapped 9N with the rear discs, you could do it, cheaper than taking it to VW anyway.

Exactly. but if I covered it with the paint- wouldn't it still rust it underneath and make that horrible bumps/lumps effect on the drum brakes?

All 4 discs had rust on the edges when I picked it up, and it had only just been built!

If you paint the drums properly, by this I mean rubbing down, cleaning, primer, and a couple of coats, I doubt the rust will appear for ages if ever. The worst that might happen if you don't do it right is that the paint will flake.

Another option is to lacquer them, but I've not done this so can't say how it would work.

haha guess yours is worse then mine then. I discovered mine about 2months?

But surely they shouldn't be that way - not when they're so new!
