I think they are very even in the power stakes, but as for weight, that is where you come unstuck.

106 = plastic = light as a feather
polo = metal = heavy but safer

It's how you drive the car though! :twisted:

Yeah a 106 GTi will pretty much run away and leave a Polo GTi. My mate has one and though i haven't went up against him yet, i've driven his and i'm sure i'd be eating 106 dust.

God help him in a smash though.! :(

Yeah they are much lighter than the Polo and so would benefit from this. However what you should do when you overtake is play with your switches, turn on the Xenons, adjust your seat and steering wheel and in the summer put on a thick jumper and sunglasses to emphasise the air-con and the multitude of extras that your Polo comes equiped with that the 106 lacks...its not all about the speed...accessories baby, look, admire and weep!

The one thing the 106 GTi has got going for it is that it came with half-leather trim as a factory option - a chap here at work has just picked a lightly modified one up - it looks quite good with the morettes on the front, but like you've all said, its light as a feather and not as safe or as well built as the Polo.

Despite the fact that the 106's lighter build gives it the edge in the performance terms, I'd have the Polo any day 8)

they are built like poo, ive done loads to friends pugs and im not joking they litrally are glued or lightly clipped together. they are very light. they are nothing like the polo gti which is built like a rock!

have like nothing in your fuel tank and in you winscreen washer, no stuff in car to weight you down, take sub out or whatever and then have a go.
try catch him on a day where is got full tank of petrol to catch him out.
youl be suprised!

power is not most important.... if it handles like amilk float then having 1000bhp in 1 wont make sense.

handling and pwer makes most sense.

My mate use to have a 106 xsi which is the 8 valve version that went like s**t of a very shiny shiny thing! i gave the little thing a race in my gti and just got the edge after 75mph but 0-60 it pissed on me!

Wow, your mate must have midget feet, I tried to drive one once, but had to give up because I was pressing all three pedals at once. Fine, they've got posh seats, but they're so small you end up intimately involved with the gearstick.

At the end of the day, it might go a bit faster, but would you really want to go that fast in effectively a biscuit tin! To make things worse, it's based on a freaking Sh!troen AX...
