Just collected a GT engine with around 43K miles under its belt yesterday
Anyways, i believe it needs a new AFM. Any one on here know about a suitable 'upgrade' or 'replacement'... ie.. what cars can a suitable AFM/air filter box be sourced from?
I've been trying to use the ETKA, but... to no avail
Also, what is the code for the close ratio gearbox from a GT? Can a suitable replacement be sourced easily from another VAG model? If so... what cars can it be found on?
I think thats it for now...
Cheers.
Pete

if i'm right the GT has the 3F engine code, the gearbox codes for this are AHD and CEH I don't know which is the close ratio one but guess it's the latter

aloha to a fellow north easterner...

Now then fella. Glad to see another from my neck of the woods appearing on this forum
Thanx for your info about the gearbox, but i 'need' a little more 'sure footed' advice reegarding the codes & possible other VAG cars i could source one from.
Cheers.

CEH and AHD have the same ratios but the CEH has a different casing which means they accept LSD's.
As for the AFM you can either get one off a GT or NZ engine. You van also get a golf 8v GTi Afm (also on some passats) which is bigger but it doesnt always work very well with the gt engine. Whats wrong with the afm? Maybe it just needs adjusting?

I've got an aif flow meter available. You can use a golf digifant one, but it's better to use the original one for now. You can use any Mk 3 gearbox, but they vary in ratios etc. The closest to a GT box would probably be the 1.0 litre 5 speed.

Is that the ayz?

AHZ is the close ratio 1 litre box thats the same as the GT box but with a shorter final drive (even worse on the motorway!) Yours is the economy 1.0 5 speed if its an AYZ, which is more like the 8p box on the standard 1.3. I'll let tahrey fill you in on the ratios. (Im sure he will)

Go-on then I'll post em:
stats at 3000rpm, Speeds 1-5 185/50/14 tyres, taken from Mark Hunter's Illustrious table (Although most of these gearboxes were added for tahreys benefit and thirst for gearbox related knowledge)
AHZ 1 litre close ratio
12.88
21.33
30.30
40.54
52.31
AHD 1.3 litre close ratio
13.53
22.40
31.83
42.58
54.94
AYZ 1 litre economy
12.88
22.74
35.61
49.96
60.16
8P 1.3 litre economy
13.53
23.88
37.40
52.47
63.18

I think you need to type more in your posts Gareth. Not nearly verbose enough to unseat Tahrey as mammoth waffley post champion...

my gearbox seems to be middle of the road then by those figures..short first gear (as i know from the 2 seconds it lasts) but rest seems fine to run off the gt engine to me.

Incidentally... what location on the 'box' is the 3 figure identity code situated? (for future refference)
Cheers.

Its on the highest part of the gearbox where the gearbox mates to the engine, directly under the themostat housing.

I've just been out to have a look and can't find the code on the gearbox, but my Service Schedule has AHD written in it next to 3F so I'm assuming that my car has an AHD 'box.
Was holding out a vague hope that it'd take an LSD, ah well.
